Tara schooner welcomes on board journalists, policymakers, funders and scientists
EMBL joined Tara at its first stopovers for Mission Microplastics in London (11–13 June) and Hamburg (16–19 June).
In London, EMBL Director General Edith Heard and Director of EMBL-EBI Ewan Birney joined a reception on board, together with UK policymakers and funders.
In Hamburg, EMBL staff and their families boarded Tara for a tour of the ship. Journalists, the French ambassador to Germany Anne-Marie Descôtes, and the French consul in Hamburg Laurent Toulouse came aboard for a joint EMBL–Tara press conference. Afterwards, the stopover was celebrated with a reception in Hamburg City Hall, hosted by Katharina Fegebank, Second Mayor and Senator for Science, Research, and Gender Equality of the City of Hamburg. The day concluded with a visit by the Tara crew to the EMBL Hamburg site.
To study the effect of commonly used drugs on bacterial envelopes, EMBL scientists applied a biochemical assay using a colour reaction. The deeper the red, the stronger the disruptive effect of the drug.
