Support EMBL

Harnessing the power of philanthropy to accelerate scientific discovery and drive innovative solutions for global challenges

Our supporters

Our thanks go to those listed below, and to all the others–some of whom have chosen to remain anonymous–who over the years have made invaluable contributions towards advancing science for the benefit of all, and nurturing the next generation of pioneering scientists.

H.W. & J. Hector Foundation

The H.W. & J. Hector Foundation played a pivotal role in bringing the EMBL Imaging Centre’s World of Molecular Biology exhibition to life. Their generous core funding supported numerous exhibition elements, while their early commitment inspired further private and public support. The exhibition provides an engaging space where visitors of all ages can explore the wonders of molecular and cellular life through cutting-edge technologies like virtual reality and interactive gaming, enhancing scientific education for all.

In addition, from 2025, a new visionary long-term donation will enable the creation of dedicated AI research groups, data engineering teams, and state-of-the-art infrastructure, along with fellowship and skills development programmes that bridge AI and the life sciences. These initiatives aim to attract top talent, foster collaboration across academia and industry, and embed AI firmly in the delivery of research infrastructures at EMBL.

Klaus Tschira Foundation

The EMBL Advanced Training Centre would not have been initiated without Klaus Tschira’s vision for a ‘double helix building’ and a substantial donation from the Klaus Tschira Foundation. This represents an unparalleled contribution to the advanced training of molecular life scientists in Europe and was realised with additional support from the German Federal Ministry of Science and Education (BMBF) and the state of Baden Württemberg.

In addition, from 2025, new philanthropic support from the Klaus Tschira Foundation is helping to advance pioneering research into freshwater ecosystems, bringing science back to the field to study Europe’s ecological communities and how they are affected by human activities. In parallel, support for logistics, travel, and science outreach is ensuring that new generations in Europe and beyond are inspired by science and knowledge.

Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation

The  Imaging Centre on the EMBL Heidelberg Campus is a unique service facility for the life sciences and unites cutting-edge equipment, experts and data analysis, and is also open to visiting scientists from all over the world as well as industry partners.

We thank the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation for making major donations towards the operation of the Imaging Centre, with a special focus on training scientists from academic institutions from all over the globe to work with the highly advanced microscopes.

Dieter Schwarz Foundation

The EMBL | Stanford Life Science Alliance is an inter-institutional research initiative between EMBL and the Stanford School of Medicine, dedicated to promoting science and technology. We are very grateful for the generous financial support of the Dieter Schwarz Foundation, which enabled the Alliance to promote inter-institutional collaboration with a joint postdoctoral fellowship programme and a researcher exchange programme. In addition, the funding by the Dieter Schwarz Foundation helped bring together the wider life science community in joint Alliance events to encourage networking and the exchange of new ideas.

Manfred Lautenschläger Foundation

We thank the Manfred Lautenschläger Foundation for a substantial gift enabling the EMBL Summer School for Undergraduates  – Talents teach Talents to run for several years. In addition, we are hugely grateful for the Foundation’s impactful support that enabled the development of the Advanced Mobile Laboratory (AML).

The Manfred Lautenschläger Foundation had previously supported the Science and Society Programme at EMBL for more than 10 years. We have deepest respect for Manfred Lautenschläger’s outstanding contributions to promoting science and research in the Rhein-Neckar region.

Heidelberg Materials AG

We are very grateful to Heidelberg Materials for the generous cost-free provision of building materials for the Imaging Centre on EMBL’s Heidelberg Campus and thereby supporting the creation of this unique service facility for scientists from around the world.

Friends of EMBL

The Friends of EMBL support projects of high scientific and societal relevance with a group of like-minded science enthusiasts.

Members of the Corporate Partnership Programme

The Members of the Corporate Partnership Programme enable talented young scientists to attend world-class scientific conferences and access advanced scientific training at EMBL.

Community of Supporters

We warmly extend our gratitude to the community of supporters who have contributed to EMBL initiatives that support breakthrough science for human and planetary health and the next generation of pioneering scientists.
