X-Ray Imaging

High-Throughput Tomography (HiTT) on P14

How to apply

Annual Call for Proposals 2026. The call for proposals is now open to apply for beamtime between April and August 2026. Please submit your proposal via the EMBL user portal before Monday, 27th October 2025 (midnight CET).

The High throughput tomography of biological samples at P14 is in operation, and data collection can be performed in person on site with the support of a local contact. Academic access to the P14 beamline is freely available to all research groups, and is prioritised on scientific grounds only. All proposals for beamline access are evaluated by the Project Evaluation Committee.

Below is a detailed explanation of the proposal roll-out, application procedure, and timelines.

If you have any more questions, please get in touch with the EMBL Hamburg User Office for general information or contact the Duke Team for specific questions related to High Throughput Tomography (HiTT) at P14. We invite you to visit our website for comprehensive information on the acquisition process and the diverse possibilities offered by our beamline.

Beamtime at P14 is allocated once per calendar year. The official call for beamtimes in 2026 will be open approximately from September to November (exact dates to be updated). If you are interested in applying for beamtime for the first time, please get in touch with us before submitting a proposal.

Proposals can be submitted online on the EMBL Hamburg user portal (SMIS).

To submit a proposal, just follow the steps below:

Create a SMIS account

Please go to the SMIS webpage and create a new EMBL User portal account using your institutional email.

Create a new proposal
  • Go to Proposals/Experiments → Proposals → New Proposal
  • Select a “X-ray Imaging Proposal”. Most proposals will be “Single” proposals. If you plan to apply for a large project with multiple PIs or multiple sub-projects, please get in touch with us to check which application process (single or BAG) is the most appropriate for you.
  • Fill out all the questions about your proposal in all of the tabs.
  • Important information:
    • If you have collected data at P14 before please indicate on which proposal.
    • Please indicate the timeframe when you and your samples are available. Please be aware that you might get beamtime as soon as on the 1st day of the run, if no timeframe is indicated.
    • If you are unsure how many shifts are required to scan all of your samples, please get in touch.
    • If your samples are of Human Origin, please indicate it in the corresponding question. Human samples require an extra ethics approval by the EMBL Bioethics Service prior to imaging.
  • Save your proposal draft. It should look like this now:
  • Write the Experiment Method Form and upload it. You can download the template by clicking on the symbol on the right side (upper arrow).
  • Fill out and upload your Sample Sheets  (bottom arrow). Each type of sample (e.g. mouse brain embedded in paraffin) needs a separate sample sheet.
  • If all the information was added correctly your proposal should be ready for submission.
  • Submit your proposal by clicking on the Submit button!
