Lichtmikroskope sind unabdingbare Instrumente, die helfen, viele Aspekte der Biologie zu verstehen. Elektronenmikroskope zeigen kleinere Details, aber Lichtmikroskope sind in der Lage, lebende Zellen in ihrer natürlichen Umgebung abzubilden. Neue Technologien erlauben es, tiefer in lebendes Gewebe zu blicken, ohne die Probe zu beschädigen, und zeigen Details, die kleiner sind als die Wellenlänge des Lichts, das die Probe beleuchtet.
