The Library was opened on the 20th November 1979 and it is named after the Hungarian-American scientist Leo Szilárd, who in part initiated the idea of EMBL.

EMBL librarians visited the library of Heidelberg University Hospital Center for Child and Adolescent Medicine and handed over a generous donation from EMBL staff, collected on the book flea market during the celebration of reopening of the Szilárd Library.
The library will be closed from 11:30 to 13:30 due to a special event in meeting room B28. However, extra workspaces have been booked for users to utilize during this time.
