The EMBL Imaging Centre WoW Award – EMBL Imaging Centre

EMBL Imaging Centre

Open access to cutting-edge electron and light microscopy

We provide researchers from Europe and beyond with a synergistic portfolio of imaging services including cryo-EM, super-resolution and intravital microscopy to enable new ground-breaking research that crosses the scales of biology.

The EMBL Imaging Centre WoW Award

Have you visited the Imaging Centre at EMBL Heidelberg and were wondering what you would need to do to see your image displayed on the large LED wall that is part of the exhibition?

The EMBL Imaging Centre and EMBL’s exhibition “The World of Molecular Biology” are looking for new images to be shown on the large LED wall (40 m²) – the ‘Window of Wonder’ – located in the atrium of the EMBL IC building. We are welcoming submissions from everyone who applied imaging technology available at EMBL – from EMBL researchers, their collaboration partners as well as users of all EMBL imaging facilities – across EMBL sites and services!

The submission portal is open from 15 October until 15 December 2025. A jury of EMBL scientists and imaging experts, as well as members of the Science Education and Public Engagement and Communication teams will select the most striking and beautiful images, which will be professionally processed for animated display on the LED wall. An award ceremony with a display premiere is planned for spring 2026, where the selected images can be admired for the first time.

🔬What images can I submit?

  • Invited are submissions across the imaging spectrum – from electron microscopy all the way to whole organism light microscopy – atomic to organismal scale – structural biology to developmental biology – life sciences and material sciences – raw images to processed images. Composites of several individual images are also welcome. No hard restrictions apply!
  • Eligible are EMBL researchers as well as external users of all EMBL’s imaging facilities – across EMBL sites and services

⚙️Requirements?

  • We ask you to submit your image at the highest resolution possible. Ideally the native resolution should be as close to 4000 px wide x 2000 px as possible, however we realise that this might be rare across the technologies. The company responsible for processing can do upscaling matching the needs for display on the LED wall, but it is very important that the image is not upscaled beforehand.
  • Standard image formats such as TIFF, JPG, PNG are all fine for submission.
  • You have to own your image and have not published it elsewhere. The final processed image will be owned by EMBL as part of the “World of Molecular Biology” exhibition (more details on that aspect can be found in the submission form).

💡What else do you need to know?

  • With the submission we will ask you to submit a few words accompanying the image – “the story behind the image” – as well as technical information on the image and the sample, e.g. what system/microscope and what objective was used, was the image processed as well as what labelling was used.
  • You can submit up to 3 images, but please note it is required that you submit one submission form for each image.

(Submission closes 15 December)
