We, the EMBL Imaging Centre team, are excited to announce that the Boehringer Ingelheim Stiftung (BIS), a long-standing and highly valued supporter, agreed to support us with €7 million. This significant contribution marks a major step forward in our efforts to advance cutting-edge imaging technologies and ensure the service portfolio and broad access to these capabilities for the international scientific community.

We are grateful to EMBL and its leadership for their continuous support in this achievement. In particular we would like to give a special thanks to Jan Ellenberg, our outgoing Head, and Matthias Hentze, Director at EMBL and Co-Director of MMPU, who played a pivotal role in guiding the efforts that led to securing this funding, contributing to the continued growth and success of the EMBL Imaging Centre. This is the second major contribution from BIS, following their initial €5 million commitment in 2017, which laid the foundation for our user support and training programmes. Their continued support highlights the impact the EMBL Imaging Centre has had since opening in mid-2021, with more than 290 projects and training sessions delivered to scientists from 27 countries.

The new funding will enable us to expand our service capacity, recruit additional expert staff, and further develop pioneering imaging technologies towards service-readiness. New technologies and services will cover more advanced correlative workflows in close interaction also with other EMBL facilities across sites and beyond classical imaging approaches. New light and electron microscopy regimes just coming out of technology development labs might expand our service portfolio to the benefit of the research community. Importantly, it will also support the creation of new positions within our team, further strengthening our services and training programmes.

We look forward to the next phase of the EMBL Imaging Centre and invite everyone interested to follow our progress.

New job opportunities will be announced after the summer break on our website and social media channels.
