Courses and Conferences

EMBL Courses and Conferences are a major European platform for sharing and expanding research, knowledge and contacts through face-to-face and virtual interaction

Become an event reporter

To help expand the reach of our events to scientists who would benefit from attending but face financial constraints, EMBL Events is offering the opportunity to join a conference as an Event Reporter in exchange for a waived conference fee.

As an Event Reporter, you’ll actively share live insights and highlights from the event on your own social media channels and submit a written summary of the meeting afterwards which will be published on the EMBL Events blog.

This opportunity is offered for all EMBL Conferences, EMBO Workshops, and EMBO | EMBL Symposia taking place at EMBL Heidelberg, Germany, and virtually.

What’s in it for me?

As an EMBL Event Reporter you will

  • Take part in the event for free, either on site or virtually
  • Get social media exposure as the EMBL Events accounts will repost many of your posts
  • Gain experience in covering events on social media
  • Get tips and tricks from social media experts
  • Get experience on writing a blog article
  • Get noticed by peers and professionals
  • Enhance your professional profile

Please note that for on-site events you will still need to cover your travel and accommodation.

What will I have to do?

  • Post live updates and highlights on your social media accounts during the event
  • Write a summarising report within 4 weeks after the event and submit it to marketing@embl.de

To view past event reports, check out our blog.

Who should apply?

  • Scientists who would benefit from attending an EMBL event but are unable to do so due to financial constraints
  • Individuals with an active and established social media presence (minimum 6 months) who can spark a conversation about the event through their posts on one or more of the following platforms: BlueSky, X (formerly Twitter), LinkedIn, or Instagram
  • Those with experience writing blog posts or similar science-related content — not essential, but a plus

Application process

Fill out the application form which should include your social media handles, the conference you are interested in, your motivation to become an Event Reporter, and how it fits your scientific background and send it to marketing@embl.de.

All applications will be evaluated after the on-site registration deadline of the event in question. Late applications will be considered on a case by case basis.

Please note that we are unable to provide individual feedback to unsuccessful applicants.

Past EMBL Event Reporters are welcome to apply again the following year.
