Despite the cold autumn weather, workers are busy on the rooftop of the parking garage at EMBL Heidelberg. The 2176 m² rooftop is getting transformed into a combination of a green roof and a photovoltaic plant.

The planted green roof will retain rainwater, while the solar panels – installed in an east–west direction – will produce a peak power of up to 190 kWp which will be used to help power the site. The installation of the panels will be finished by mid-December 2020, and will provide EMBL with green energy.

This is one of many ongoing projects to decrease EMBL’s impact on the environment and to make the organisation greener. In addition, EMBL has started an Environmental Research Initiative to help solving the pressing problems that threaten humankind and our environment.

The Facility Management team at EMBL have planned the installation and are supervising the construction.
