Biodiversity is crucial to human well-being, and is increasingly threatened. Habitat destruction, invasive species, overexploitation, illegal wildlife trade, pollution and climate change put the survival of species worldwide at risk.

The IUCN Red List currently includes 169420 assessed species, of which 47187 are threatened with extinction.

Commemorating the adoption of the Convention on Biodiversity at the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit in 1992, the theme of the International Day for Biodiversity 2025 edition is “Harmony with nature and sustainable development“.

The IDB 2025 campaign seeks to focus the world’s attention on the linkages between the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Goals and Targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) as two universal agendas that must be pursued in tandem in the spirit of the recently adopted Pact for the future.
