Course overview

Over the past decade, cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) has revolutionised our understanding of biomolecular structures across multiple spatial scales. Technological advances have provided unprecedented insights — from atomic-resolution structures of biologically heterogeneous states to the first glimpses into the molecular sociology of the cell.

Emerging breakthroughs, such as time-resolved approaches, novel (correlated) imaging technologies, and AI-driven image processing, now highlight the potential of cryo-EM for yet another leap forward. To fully realise this potential, in-depth advanced training is essential to drive innovation and develop new technologies that address emerging biological challenges.

This course provides a comprehensive foundation in advanced single-particle and cellular tomography techniques, encompassing the entire workflow — from sample preparation to data collection and image processing.

Audience

Designed for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers with basic experience in cryo-EM and 3D image processing, the course will equip participants with the expertise to integrate state-of-the-art single-particle analysis and tomography into their research. It will also prepare them to critically discuss their knowledge with peers and ultimately contribute to the development of novel cryo-EM methodologies beyond the current state of the art.

What past participants say about the course

The course was among the best I’ve attended on this topic. It was an exceptional opportunity for both learning and networking.” – Fernanda Sala, UMG and MPI, Germany
