EMBL Conference

BioMalPar XXI: biology and pathology of the malaria parasite

Overview

This conference will take place at EMBL Heidelberg, with the option to attend virtually.

Conference overview

Malaria remains a significant global public health challenge, with increasing drug resistance, COVID interruptions to interventions, and rising malaria deaths confounding our efforts against this persistent disease.

BioMalPar reaffirms our commitment to understanding the Plasmodium parasite and its interactions with hosts and vectors. Despite the challenges, there are promising developments: new drug combinations are showing efficacy, and we now have two approved vaccines that offer hope for the future.

Meeting for the 21st time, BioMalPar 2025 focusses on strengthening our global research community by fostering new partnerships and collaborations.

We acknowledge that defeating malaria requires a united effort across continents and disciplines – and we reflect this with our diverse line-up of speakers. The upcoming conference provides an invaluable platform for scientists worldwide to convene, share critical insights, and explore cutting-edge technologies.

Together, we can drive forward the innovations and strategies needed to reduce the terrible toll malaria takes. Join us in this crucial endeavour to understand the biology of the malaria parasite and to advance global health.

Topics

  • Epidemiology – the epidemiology of malaria in endemic countries
  • Vaccines and immunity – how vaccines can alter this landscape
  • Vector and transmission – what role transmission through the mosquito vector plays
  • Molecular and cellular biology – the molecular and cellular biology of the parasite
  • Drug targets and resistance – and how we can use these findings to find new drug targets and combat resistance
