Our mission is to train scientists. This blog is a platform for us to share updates on our annual programme, tips and tricks for scientists, new e-learning opportunities, and sometimes just something to make you smile.
Jules Nohle joined EMBL’s Course and Conference Office in October 2023. Coming from further south in Germany (Stuttgart), she moved to lovely Heidelberg in 2004 to work in various hospitals including Uniklinik Heidelberg, before coming to EMBL.
Jules worked as an intensive care nurse for 16 years, and so you can count on her for almost every emergency, from unforeseen changes in the conference programme, last-minute speaker cancellations, or even small medical accidents of participants. We feel like we are in good hands 🫶

Role: Course and Conference Officer
At EMBL since: October 2023
Number of organised conferences/courses: 3 conferences, 2 courses, EMBL LAB DAY 🥳
What’s your favourite place in Heidelberg?
I love hanging out at Wilhelmsplatz in Weststadt, which is just a block from my apartment. It is a beautiful place, the kids can play, and there’s a free bookshelf where I have found a couple of real gems (thanks to the mysterious benefactor who keeps dropping great English books).
What do you like most about your job?
What I love most about my job is the rush when the “big day” finally arrives. After months of planning, I thrive on the whirlwind — darting from place to place, keeping the reins, and making sure every little detail clicks into place. It’s that mix of adrenaline, focus, and satisfaction that makes all the late nights worth it. And I especially love watching people connect, learn, and enjoy themselves in this wonderful environment here at the ATC.
First thing you do before a conference/course starts, and the first thing you do after a conference/course finishes?
First thing I always try to do is deep-clean my apartment the weekend before the event since I know I won’t have time to do anything at all during that week.
First thing I do after the event is collapsing on the couch with my cats and enjoy the feeling of decompression (not without worrying that all my overseas speakers have made it to their flights okay).
If you weren’t a Course and Conference Officer, what would you be?
I used to work as an intensive care nurse and nursing instructor while pursuing my degree in the humanities. My guess is I’d still be working the bedside and chasing a PhD in sociology or political science.
What is your favourite book and why?
I could never pick one! But some of my favourite authors include Ned Beauman, Noah Hawley, Margaret Atwood, and David Mitchell
Your favourite music genre / band?
I recently rediscovered my love for 90s grunge and alt-rock introducing my teenage son to all the bands I loved when I was his age. It’s been a really fun journey together.
What series have you been binge-watching lately that we should also definitely watch?
Murderbot on Apple TV – believe me, I was very sceptical at first, but we laughed almost the entire time, while the show also spurred deep conversations about what it means to be human or what constitutes personhood.
We hope you enjoyed that little peek into Jules’ world as much as we did. If you want to find out more about the course and conference office and the events we offer at the ATC, you’ll find additional information on our events page.
