Umea University was founded in 1965 and is Sweden’s fifth oldest university. Today, it has a strong international and multicultural presence with students, teachers and researchers from all over the world (approx. 34,000 students and over 4,100 employees). The aim of the university is to continue becoming one of Scandinavia’s best environments for study and research and meet the challenges of an eve r-increasing global society. Umea Universit y is one of Sweden’s most comprehensive universities within all areas of scientific research. This research takes place on a broad scale in order to compete in the international arena. The university conducts groundbreaking research within several areas e.g. Life Science, Metabolomics, Imaging, Bioinformatics, Biogeochemistry, Ecosystem Dynamics, Energy, Infection medicine, Plant and Forest Biotechnology and Soc ial Welfare Research.

As a partner in this project, Umea university intends to cooperate with the EMBL towards training of the Fellows. Umea University can host up to four Fellows per year in the period 2020-2024 through secondments and introduce them to the ways of working, instrumentation and procedures at Umea University. Duration of secondments will be between 2 and 6 months and will be arranged in communication with the Fellow. Fellows who will do secondments at Umea university will come from the field related or complementary to the field of work of Umea university.

At Umea University Fellows will have a possibility to learn, but not limited to, imaging, chemical biology, metabolomics, bioinformatics, infection medicine, computational modelling, and structural biology. The Fellows will also have a chance to get acquainted with the operation of Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS), which is the Swedish national node in the Nordic EMBL partnership in Molecular Medicine and Umea Center for Microbial Research (UCMR). MIMS and UCMR are two strong life science research environments. Umea University provides state-of-the-art infrastructures for life science research, for example platforms for advanced microscopy and Electron microscopy including Cryo-EM as well as other technical platforms. Furthermore, the Fellows have the chance to get acquainted with Umea center for Functional Brain Imaging (UFBI) where imaging techniques are used to examine brain structure and function in relation to both basic and clinical questions. Umea University will dedicate supervision capacity for each fellow on secondments. During secondments, Fellows can stay employed by EMBL.

Umea university intends also to host mini -secondments in a duration of up to two weeks, during which Fellows will shadow operations at Umea university.
