The Institute of Biotechnology CAS, v. v. i. (IBT, Biotechnologicky ust av AV CR, v. v. i. in Czech, http: //ibt.cas.cz) was established in 2008 and since then it has focused on excellent basic research in biomedical molecular biology with prospective transfer of biotechnological methods and tools to human and veterinary medicine or other important areas of human activity. One of the main reasons why IBT was founded was to concentrate a critical mass of research potential in terms of people and equipment able to produce excellent science at the interface between structural biology, biotechnology and medicine in the BIOCEV research center (Biotechnology and Biomedicine Center of the Academy of Sciences and Charles University in Vestec). The BIOCEV project is realized as a part of the operational program Research and Development for Innovations (OP RDI) by six institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences and two faculties of the Charles University.

As a partner in this project, the Institute of Biotechnology CAS, v. v. i. intends to cooperate with the EMBL towards training of the Fellows. The Institute of Biotechnology CAS, v. v. i. can host up to three Fellows per year in the  period  2020-2024 through secondments and introduce them to the ways of  working, instrumentation and procedures at the Institute of Biotechnology CAS, v. v. i. Duration of secondments will be between 2 and 6 months and will be arranged in communication with the  Fellow. Fellows who  will  do secondments  at the Institute of Biotechnology CAS, v. v. i. will come from the field related or complement ary to the  field of work of the Institute of Biotechnology CAS, v. v. i. At the Institute of Biotechnology CAS, v. v. i., Fellows will have a possibility to learn the complete pipeline of protein production and characterization from the selection of expression system(s), purification, basic characterization by a host of biophysical techniques including MST, SPR, SAXS, several spectroscopy methods, various mass spectrometry experiment s, as we ll as robotics-assisted crystallization and collection of diffraction data. The Fellows will also have a chance to get acquainted with the operation of quantitative PCR and specialized molecular biology techniques such as protein modifications by directed evolution and incorporation of non -canonical amino acids. The Institute of Biotechnology CAS, v. v. i. will dedicate supervision capacity fo r each fellow on secondments. During secondments, Fellows can stay employed by EMBL.

The Institute of Biotechnology CAS, v. v. i. intends also to host mini-secondments in a duration of up to two weeks, during which Fellows will shadow operations at the Institute of Biotechnology CAS, v. v. i.
