Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC) based in Brno, Czech Republic, was established in 2011 to concentrate regional capacity for excellent research in life sciences and nanotechnologies and advanced material and enable synergies among seven robust research programmes. Masaryk University (MU) is the largest of six institutional constituents of CEITEC (4 universities, 2 research organizations).

MU is an independent university research institute, focused solely on research and research training with autonomy in setting up international standards of research management. Between 2011 and 2015, the building up of CEITEC was supported by EU Structural Funds and Czech State Budget investment worth 223 million EUR.

As a partner in this project, CEITEC MU intends to cooperate with the EMBL towards training of the Fellows. CEITEC MU can host up to two Fellows per year in the period 2020-2024 through secondments and introduce them to the ways of working, instrumentation and procedures at CEITEC MU. Duration of secondments will be between 2 and 6 months and will be arranged in communication with the Fellow.

Fellows who will do secondments at CEITEC MU will come from the field related or complementary to the field of work of CEITEC MU. At CEITEC MU Fellows will have a possibility to learn cutting edge methodologies in genomics, bioinformatics, cryo-electron microscopy, cellular imaging, proteomics, and integrative structural biology in general. The Fellows will also have a chance to get acquainted with the operation of high-end electron microscope for high-resolution cryoEM and cryo-tomography FEI Titan Krios equipped with an energy filter and direct detector camera; they can study structure, dynamics, and interactions of biomolecules using several techniques including NMR spectrometers in the range of proton frequencies from 500 MHz to 950 MHz; fellows can study all steps of proteomics analysis from protein isolation, separation of protein/peptide mixtures, characterization and data processing. In the period of 2020-21, there is a plan to purchase high-end imaging techniques (light-sheet microscope and super-resolution) where image analyst/specialist can be trained. Next-generation sequencing and data analysis can be provided by Genomics facility which closely cooperate with expert bioinformaticians. CEITEC MU has a 7 years of experience with running of Core Facilities, their management, evaluation, and funding which is a crucial part of their successful operation. CEITEC MU will dedicate supervision capacity for each fellow on secondments. During secondments, Fellows can stay employed by EMBL. CEITEC MU intends also to host mini-secondments in a duration of up to two weeks, during which Fellows will shadow operations at CEITEC MU.
