Integrating European life sciences

To coordinate and integrate European life science research

Internationality, openness, and collaboration are vital aspects of EMBL research.

EMBL works to establish links and initiate collaborative relationships between scientific communities in its member states and the wider world. Each year, EMBL connects with member state scientists, scientific organisations, policymakers, and political stakeholders to elevate the level of life science research worldwide. The video here offers but a small window into that relationship building and maintenance, and the stories noted below are just representative of EMBL’s ongoing, prolific outreach with new and old partners.

Strengthening engagement with our member states

EMBL and IIT collaboration

EMBL and the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) met to explore new opportunities for scientific exchange, including RNA biology, neuroscience, and more.

EMBL and CSIC working together

EMBL and Spain’s CSIC discussed microbial communities in the context of One Health at first joint event since signing a memorandum of understanding.

EMBL builds on links with Malta

EMBL deepened scientific ties, opening the door for greater collaboration with Malta’s life science community in new memorandum of understanding.

“EMBL’s Partnership Conference brings together a fantastic network, a model that supports our research very well, and a lot of tradition. It’s a window into various new developments: the EMBL Programme, of course, taking new steps, new methods that are always hallmarks of EMBL, and new imaging methods like those that apply to our neuroscience.”

– Poul Nissen, Director of the Danish Research Institute of Translational Neuroscience (DANDRITE), the Danish node of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine; Professor at the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Aarhus University

The power of EMBL partnerships

The EMBL Connection

EMBL’s Partnership Conference highlighted the value of its networks, connecting researchers to share ideas, forge new links, and ultimately enrich the research being undertaken.

Molecular medicine across borders

DANDRITE, the Danish node of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine, hosted its annual meeting, which explored access to cutting-edge technologies and future research directions.

“It’s been great to work with the EMBL leadership team this year on strategies to implement the new EMBL scientific programme in Australia and witness the amazing capabilities of EMBL’s remarkable imaging facilities firsthand in Heidelberg.”

– James Whisstock, EMBL Australia Scientific Head

Engaging with international partners

EIROforum Conference: Grand challenges in AI and data science

Welcoming over 340 participants, EMBL hosted the first EIROforum conference, looking into ‘Grand challenges in AI and data science’. Amidst journalists and European policymakers, EIROforum scientists explored how to apply scientific progress for maximal societal and economic impact.

EMBL and UNESCO Residency in Infection Biology Research

EMBL signed a new agreement to enable cooperation in open science, capacity building, and talent development. In this context, EMBL is looking forward to hosting a researcher in infection biology, with a primary affiliation to an Africa-based research group in the near future.

“The EMBL-ITT Scientific Workshop really was just the beginning of ongoing collaborations among CNR, EMBL, and IIT scientists. I look forward to what we will accomplish together in science, technology, and in addressing some of the planet’s biggest challenges today.”

– Daniela Corda, former Director of the Biomedical Sciences Department at the Italian Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), in whose campus EMBL Rome is based
