Ethics Governance

Research projects which plan to utilise human material or data derived thereof must undergo an ethical review before the research commences at EMBL

The Ethics Portal, which is EMBL’s online ethics application tool, covers internal applications relating to human, animal and environmental research. It also extends to applications submitted by external applicants who wish to use the EMBL’s facilities and equipment and bring human samples / data on site, and this process is listed below:

  1. If you are an external non-EMBL applicant, you must first register for an account on the EMBL online Ethics Portal in order to submit an application. Please then select the “Human Research – Application to use Human Samples and Data” button.
  2. The portal will prompt you to submit all the necessary documentation and information. This may include:
    • Research Ethics Approval documentation
    • Patient Consent Forms
    • Patient Information Forms
    • Any other document mentioned in the application form
    • An External Applicant Checklist and Declaration
  3. The Bioethics Office processes the submitted application, and liaises with the applicant to ensure all the information and documentation is correct and ready for Due Diligence process.
  4. The virtual platform system will then notify the applicant of the Bioethics Office Due Diligence decision, which may be a) approval, b) rejection, or c) more information needed.

For any questions on the process or documents required, please get in touch via our contact page.
