How can research discoveries be effectively translated into impact? What lessons can we learn from previous ventures? EMBL staff, alumni and anyone interested in launching new spin-out ventures or collaborating with industry are invited to join us for EMBL in the UK 2022 at the University of Dundee. 

22 May 2017, Oxford University

EMBL alumni and their colleagues and networks in the UK were invited to the EMBL in the UK meeting held at Oxford University on Monday 22 May 2017. Speakers included EMBL-EBI Director, Rolf Apweiler, as well as a cross-section of EMBL alumni from academia and industry.

23 May 2016, Cambridge, Trinity Hall College, Lecture Theatre

More than 70 UK-resident alumni and their networks were hosted at Cambridge University’s Trinity Hall College by EMBL-EBI Directors Ewan Birney and Rolf Apweiler. Inspiring projects were presented by alumni. We interviewed two of the speakers Abel Ureta-Vidal and Louise Modis.

EMBL and EMBO staff and alumni gathered for a drinks reception held annually at the EMBO Meeting. This was an excellent opportunity to exchange information and explore opportunities with the EMBL community.

12 June 2014, Hinxton

On 12 June 2014, EMBL-EBI celebrated its 20th anniversary with a day of inspiring talks and fun activities on the Genome Campus. Held on the lawn behind Hinxton Hall, the event brought together staff and alumni to connect, look back on a remarkable two decades of growth and discovery and share ideas about the future of bioinformatics.

21 November 2013, Hinxton

On 21 November, the EMBL Alumni Association (EAA) board held their 22nd meeting at EMBL-EBI, followed by a reception for staff and UK-resident EMBL alumni. Janet Thornton, EMBL-EBI Director, welcomed the 60 participants to the new South Building – which houses state-of-the-art training facilities and the ELIXIR Hub.

20 September 2012, Cambridge

UK resident EMBL alumni gathered at The Punter, one of Cambridge’s cosiest pubs, for a relaxed evening of reconnection and networking. The mix included alumni established in academic and industry careers, from the University of Cambridge and Sanger Institute, to three now at GlaxoSmithKline (shown in photo).

24 October 2007, Alumni Day at EMBL-EBI

After the ceremony to mark the opening of the new site extension, the EBI hosted an on-campus symposium for all EMBL alumni and EBI staff. The event attracted 116 participants and was a great opportunity to meet friends and enjoy an excellent programme of talks by the EBI’s directors, scientific staff and alumni.
