Norbert Hassler, former EMBL Heidelberg Group Leader, passed away on Sunday 11 January 2026 at the age of 83.

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Norbert Hassler. Norbert was a Group Leader in the Core Facilities and Scientific Services Unit at EMBL Heidelberg from 1983-2000. May he rest in peace.

“Norbert was Group Leader of the Scientific Instruments Maintenance Group from the time it was established at EMBL until his retirement in 2000. He was very much appreciated and ran everything in a calm and quiet manner; just like Norbert was. Norbert loved EMBL — nothing was too much for him. He also had a good relationship with colleagues and staff.”

“I was deeply saddened to learn of Norbert Hassler’s passing. During his time at EMBL, Norbert was always a highly-valued and much-appreciated leader of the SIMG Group. I will never forget the excellent collaboration with the Mechanical Workshop where I worked, his helpfulness, and his sense of humour. I have very fond memories of that time with him. I will miss Norbert very much.”
