Good scientific practice

As defined in EMBL’s Policy Rules of good scientific practice (IP51), plagiarism is ‘the appropriation of another person’s ideas, method, processes, results, or words without giving appropriate credit, including those obtained through confidential review of others’ research proposals and manuscripts’. This act constitutes a core ‘scientific misconduct’ that also violates the Code of Conduct issued by the Director General which establishes the principle that ‘we are committed to honesty and rigour in our scientific and other endeavours’ at EMBL.

Specific instances of plagiarism can include:

  • failing to put a quotation in quotation marks
  • giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation
  • changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit
