With effect of 15 June 2015, EMBL is introducing the EMBL Open Access Policy
Researchers with an EMBL affiliation and publishing in a peer-reviewed journal are obliged to make the article available in Europe PMC no later then six months after official publication. Using a CC-BY licence is encouraged and where EMBL pays the article processing charges (APCs) using CC-BY is obligatory.
Most publishers will deposit to Europe PMC a copy of the manuscript on behalf of the author; such information can be found on the publisher’s site and/or on Europe PMC’s Journal List tool (under Participation Level).
If such a deposition service is not offered by the publisher, the author needs to self-archive the manuscript to Europe PMC through the Europe PMC Plus tool. User guides can be found on the EuropePMC Plus User Guide page; the guide specific to the submission process can be found here.
When the Gold Open Access route (payment of Article Processing Charges) is selected, the paper must be made available on Europe PMC immediately.
The library is happy to help with the submission of manuscripts on Europe PMC and can be contacted for assistance.
EMBL will provide funding for APCs commensurate with its contribution to articles and in support of the APC provision made by external funding agencies. The funding will be distributed to EMBL’s Units and administered by the Heads of Units.
The invoices for article payments must be signed by the group leader and the unit/grant budget number, group leader name and unit name must be indicated. This information should be submitted to Purchase then, either via the Unit secretary or directly. Please, note that no invoices shall be processed without the above information.
Please contact the library if you have any questions concerning the policy or for assistance with the Europe PMC submission process. Your feedback is valuable to us, so please do not hesitate to get in touch.
