Detecting Earth’s magnetic field, zooming forward like a race car or predicting temperature changes – these might sound like superpowers but in reality, they are functions carried out by tiny molecules called proteins. These remarkable organic molecules have unique shapes and perform countless essential tasks in our bodies and throughout nature.
Unfold Your World: nature’s molecular wonders was developed in 2024 as part of EMBL’s 50th birthday celebrations. This collaborative initiative grew from the pioneering work of the PDBe team at EMBL-EBI and offers a dynamic fusion of arts and science, using proteins as creative inspiration. The project aimed to ignite curiosity about proteins and encourage young people to respond creatively to their discoveries. Teenagers aged 14-18 from across Europe submitted artworks inspired by protein form and function, all of which are now showcased online. The project culminated in December with a vernissage, an exhibition preview, showcasing art works alongside an exciting program with protein-themed activities.
