World Oceans Day – Public engagement

EMBL & DAI celebrate

World Oceans Day

Do you love the ocean? EMBL is supporting an event hosted by the Deutsch-Amerikanisches Institut (DAI) in Heidelberg to celebrate World Oceans Day. Held in the DAI library on the afternoon and evening of Wednesday 4 June, there will be a storytime session for young children and their families, hands-on activities for young people, a quiz, and a talk by EMBL scientist Flora Vincent. Please register for the event at library@dai-heidelberg.de

EMBL worked with the Tara Ocean Foundation and other partners on a flagship scientific expedition to explore European coastlines in 2023-2024. The Tara Ocean Foundation yacht, pictured here in Lorient, France, in October 2024, was key to the expedition’s success.

Flora Vincent leads the Vincent group at EMBL and is a specialist in marine microbiology, exploring the diversity and impact of tiny marine organisms called phytoplankton – one of the Earth’s most vital defences against climate change. Flora’s talk will reveal how these little-known organisms interact with each other, and why this matters so much for the health of our ocean and our planet.
