EMBL Science and Society Conference
Registration is not yet open for this event. If you are interested in receiving more information please register your interest.
AI has become an effective tool to model biology and human disease. This has conferred unprecedented predictive power in genomics but also transformative influences in fields of drug discovery and medical imaging. Yet, it also raises deep and relevant questions about trust, control, privacy of data and the human experience of living with the disruption it brings to healthcare and medicine as users and patients.
The conference will discuss where the greatest points of advantage and caution lie in a scientific sense, while discussing how we could govern and live with AI in medicine covered within showcase talks by leading experts in the field. The conference will move from what AI can do, to how it changes things and presents decisions we must make or consider for societal benefit.
The EMBL ‘Science and society’ conference series brings together scientists and experts from different disciplines to explore the relationship between scientific research and society, including the ethical, legal and social implications of developments in the life sciences.
“It is my first time attending an EMBL conference, and it will certainly not be the last, as I wish to revisit EMBL for other conferences in the future. In fact, I enjoyed the ‘EMBL Science and Society Conference’ 2025 and many thanks to the organisers for making it an unforgettable event.” – Tan Vu Nguyen, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, Germany
“The Science and Society Conference 2025 was truly outstanding. I have attended many international conferences, but this edition stood out in every aspect. The venue in Heidelberg—set in scientific tradition yet surrounded by serene greenery—was absolutely stunning. The catering, social programme, and especially the quality of speakers were impressive; every element was inspiring.” – Lisa Häberlein, European Network of Research Ethics Committees, Germany
