Pascale Cossart is a pioneering French microbiologist whose research has transformed our understanding of how bacteria infect and interact with host cells. A professor emerita at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, she is internationally recognised for her groundbreaking work on Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause serious foodborne infections.
Her discoveries have revealed how bacteria enter cells, move within tissues and manipulate their hosts, helping to establish the field of cellular microbiology and advance our understanding of infectious diseases.
Cossart has received numerous prestigious honours, including the Robert Koch Prize, the Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine and the Balzan Prize. A member of several leading scientific academies, including the Royal Society, she was also a visiting scientist at EMBL Heidelberg in 2022 and 2023.
