From a wide range of research advances, to completion of a state-of-the-art Imaging Centre, to the first ARISE research infrastructure fellows, to tech transfer successes with myriad partners, to unprecedented member state engagement, the year was marked by important scientific contributions.
2021 brought a huge range of online training from trainers across EMBL-EBI and beyond, from an introduction to the new protein structure database, AlphaFold, to a series of webinars discussing open access in the life sciences.
An independent study by Charles Beagrie Ltd estimating the impact and value of EMBL-EBI managed data resources.
With 27 member states, laboratories at six sites across Europe and thousands of scientists and engineers working together, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is a powerhouse of biological expertise. EMBL is an intergovernmental organisation, headquartered in Heidelberg, and was founded in 1974 with the mission of promoting molecular biology research in Europe, training young scientists, and developing new technologies.
EMBL currently employs more than 1800 people in Barcelona, Grenoble, Hamburg, Heidelberg, EMBL-EBI Hinxton (near Cambridge), and Rome.
Publishing hundreds of research articles and hosting dozens of conferences every year, EMBL is driving visionary fundamental research, and training Europe’s future scientific talent.

EMBL Enterprise Management Technology Transfer GmbH (EMBLEM) is an affiliate and the commercial arm of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). Established in 1999, EMBLEM identifies, protects and commercialises the intellectual property developed at EMBL, by EMBL alumni and by non-EMBL third parties. EMBLEM works closely with industrial partners in the biotech, IT and engineering markets to accelerate the transfer of innovative technology from basic research to industry.
