EMBL School Ambassador Morlin Milewski

Country: Germany

Profile

Hallo, I am Morlin and work as a Research Technician in the Wilmanns Group at EMBL Hamburg. I grew up in northern Bavaria, Germany and moved to the coast to study Chemical Engineering/Biotechnology in Emden. Shortly before graduating, I decided to leave without a degree because planning big biotechnological production units did not appear very attractive to me. I decided to slightly change topic. I undertook training to become a Biological Technical Assistant (“BTA”) and did one of my internships at the EMBL Hamburg unit, where I am working right now.

I have never regretted my choice to become a Technician, as it fits perfectly with my personality. Already as a child, I wanted to know how things work and spent a lot of time outside in nature and in the workshop of my father. Additionally, I really love to give other people a hand and to organize things. Here at EMBL Hamburg, the Technicians spend quite a large amount of their time on lab organization like ordering, taking care of machines, doing minor repairs, organizing trainings, and are the first contact person for all lab members. The rest of our working time we dedicate to research work, mostly in association with a senior lab member.

As my CV is not a “perfect” one, I hope I can show young people that it is still possible to find the right profession after a “false start”.
