An Innovative Approach to Teaching Ecology and Environmental Protection

2 July 2024

Advancing our understanding of the biological processes shaping the interactions between organisms and the environment will inform solutions for sustaining and protecting our planet’s health.

EMBL Teacher Ambassador Stefan Petrov and the 199 School in Sofia, Bulgaria, in partnership with EMBL’s Science Education and Public Engagement team and in collaboration with Merck, invite secondary school science teachers to explore this exciting area of biology in a face-to-face training course this summer. The course, “An Innovative Approach to Teaching Ecology and Environmental Protection”, will present EMBL’s approach to studying life in its context and engaging ways to bring the topic into the classroom. It introduces a collaborative scientific approach, the TRaversing European Coastlines (TREC) expedition, which has the potential to drive the development of the field and shape a new era in ecosystem research. The course is one of a series of EMBLconnect courses that enable educators across Europe to benefit from EMBL’s training model, participating in courses in the local language that are tailored to educators’ needs and local curriculum requirements.

The course will present a collection of teaching and learning materials, including a game-based resource, to introduce and engage students with the topic of changing environments. The half-day course is free of charge and the working language is Bulgarian. There are 20 places available on the course on a first-come, first-served basis.

Upon completion of the training, participants will:
