UiT comprises 7 faculties offering a broad range of study programmes. 12000 students and 2700 staff study and work here. UiT is the northernmost university of the world, and represents an international network of 140 study and research institutions of the circumpolar region. Teaching is research-based, and UiT’s seven faculties offer a broad range of study programmes. The university cooperates with all parts of the world: 200 international agreements secure an active academic exchange of students and staff with partner institutions worldwide; and more than 20% of the academic staff and 10% of the student body are from abroad. The Optical Nanoscopy Group (ONG) at UiT is led by Dr. Ahluwalia, who is a recipient of the EU’s prestigious ERC Starting Grant, ERC PoC. The ONG hosts 3 ERC project, 3 EU projects and several national and university activities. Activities include integrated optics, super-resolution bioimaging, optical & waveguide trapping and diffractive optics. The group comprises 2 associate professors, 3 engineers/researchers, 5 post-docs and 8 PhDs.

As a partner in this project, UiT intends to cooperate with the EMBL towards training of the Fellows.

UiT can host up to 3 Fellows per year in the period 2020-2024 through secondments and introduce them to the ways of working, instrumentation and procedures at the ONG. Duration of secondments will be between 2 and 6 months and will be arranged in communication with the Fellow.

Fellows who will do secondments at UiT will come from the field related or complementary to the field of work of the ONG. At the ONG at UiT, Fellows will have a possibility to learn custom-built and ERC-funded photonic chip-based single molecule localization microscopy and chip-based structured illumination microscopy; different label-free quantitative phase microscopes (common path and off-axis). The Fellows will also have a chance to get acquainted with the operation of and will have access to the commercial GE HealthCare OMX Blaze4 Structured Illumination Microscopy, DV microscopy and integrated optics and nanoscopy labs.

The ONG at UiT will dedicate supervision capacity for each fellow on secondments.
UiT intends also to host mini-secondments in a duration of up to two weeks, during which Fellows will shadow operations at UiT.
