Multinational biopharmaceutical company Celgene, world leader in developing new treatments for cancer and inflammatory diseases, has established the Celgene Institute for Translational Research Europe (CITRE) in Seville, Spain, since 2010. CITRE is the company’s first dedicated R&D site outside the USA and provides a bridge between Celgene R&D and the European research community. Scientific activities at CITRE comprise three main departments: The Human Diseased Tissue Laboratory, the Computational Biology research group and the Clinical Trials Unit.

As a partner in this project, CITRE intends to cooperate with the EMBL towards training of the Fellows. CITRE can host up to three Fellows per year in the period 2020-2024 through secondments and introduce them to the ways of working, instrumentation and procedures at Celgene. Duration of secondments will be between 2 and 6 months and will be arranged in communication with the Fellow. Fellows who will do secondments at CITRE will come from the field related or complementary to the field of work of Celgene.

At CITRE Fellows will have a possibility to learn a range of computational approaches applied to drug discovery and development, such as analysis and interpretation of high-throughput data, machine learning, mathematical modeling, quantitative systems pharmacology (USP). The Fellows will also have a chance to get acquainted with cloud and high-performance computing, lab information management systems (LIMS), Imaging technology, (single-cell) genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic measurements. Celgene will dedicate supervision capacity for each fellow on secondments. During secondments, Fellows can stay employed by EMBL.

Celgene intends also to host mini-secondments in a duration of up to two weeks, during which Fellows will shadow operations at Celgene.
