Training at EMBL
EMBL’s multifaceted training programme is committed to excellence in training at all stages of careers in the life sciences.
The ARISE Programme is a unique fellowship programme for future Research Infrastructure (RI) scientists.
It enables experienced Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathematics (STEM) professionals to become future leaders in technology development, management and operation of advanced RIs accelerating the development and availability of technology innovation in the Life Sciences.
The programme targets fellows who have a strong interest in technology development and/or improvement and in supporting other scientists by providing different technologies as a service. The comprehensive training program they complete includes learning how to run services, manage teams, support users, manage projects, and promote innovation. Upon completion of the fellowship, they will be uniquely positioned to take up positions as senior scientists or leaders in core facilities, research infrastructures or technology development groups, in academia, industry, health care and other sectors.
ARISE began in 2021 as a pioneering programme to better define and develop the career route and prospects of RI scientists. Fellows propose and develop their own technologies or methods for services. They will be the first generation of new RI scientists that are comprehensively trained to not only develop technologies, but to operate and manage service provision in RIs, filling a much needed gap in the RI landscape. For more information please visit our programme pages which includes profiles of our fellows.
ARISE2 builds on the first version of the ARISE programme challenging fellows to develop novel technologies for services that will at the same time simplify or ideally automate FAIR data management, for the benefit of users, ultimately leading to greater FAIRification and improved data integration. To achieve this, new data science and AI training elements have been added to the programme’s training curriculum. This will put ARISE2 fellows at the very forefront of research and innovation competencies, boosting their career prospects. The addition of a strong focus on data science and AI is not only timely but essential, given the evolving landscape of life science research which is becoming increasingly interdisciplinary and data-driven.
