Coordinating efforts within and between our member states
In this new Programme EMBL’s international relations strategy will aim to inspire and coordinate strategic initiatives within and between our member states, to propel Europe into a new era of life sciences as a global leader.
Internationality, openness, and collaboration are vital aspects of EMBL research, and EMBL works to establish links and initiate collaborative relationships between scientific communities in its member states and the wider world. We also want to inform and support science policy efforts that could have wide research and societal impacts. Through strategic international collaborations and initiatives, EMBL will bridge scientific communities in Europe, especially in new scientific areas represented in the Programme. In addition, EMBL will continue building on long-standing relationships with its member states, EIROforum, the European Commission, and ESFRI Projects (including Elixir, Instruct, and Euro-Bioimaging), as well as current and new global partners. EMBL plans to strengthen engagements and collaborate with national infrastructures and stakeholders to help build an inclusive and competitive scientific ecosystem. We also aim to improve the visibility and connectivity of our Partnership Programme, and to increase the collaborative links between research conducted at EMBL and at the partner institutes.

“We approach EMBL’s plans for integration in much the same way one builds a community. In our new Programme, working closely with our member states, our institutional partners, and our European collaborators is central to ensuring that the voice of the life sciences leads in the global debate on human and planetary health.”

EMBL’s vision is to advance understanding of ecosystems at the molecular level and study life in context. The result will be fundamental research that expands what we know about life on earth and provides the means to address major global challenges.
This new Programme will expand EMBL’s scope to study the molecular basis of life in the context of changing environments, transforming our understanding of life on earth and informing potential solutions for some of society’s biggest challenges, such as irreversible loss of biodiversity, antimicrobial resistance, pollution, climate change, food security, and emergent pathogens.
