EMBL renews cooperation with Latvia's BMC
EMBL and the Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Centre (BMC) signed a new Memorandum of Understanding in February 2026. The agreement aims to further enhance cooperation through improved access to EMBL infrastructures for Latvian researchers, joint applications for European framework funding, and interdisciplinary cooperation in data science, artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, and biomedicine. BMC is the leading molecular biology and biomedicine institute in Latvia, and Coordinator of the Horizon Europe Teaming for Excellence project IntegroHEALTH, also including EMBL as advanced partner. The new MoU sets the institutional frame for a wider EMBL-BMC cooperation
From June 2026 onwards, the BMC, together with the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis LIOS, are merged under the umbrella of the new National Institute of Research and Innovation NIRI, a leading life and natural sciences centre in Latvia with a truly European research scope.
