EMBL Insight Lecture
Rhythms of Life – how cellular clocks function in development and disease”
by Dr. Alexander Aulehla – 13 December 2018

Have you ever wondered what role timing plays in the development of multicellular life? Find out and register now to attend the next EMBL Insight Lecture on 13 December 2018 in Heidelberg or virtually over the web.

Aimed at 16+ students, the EMBL Insight Lecture is presented each year by a senior EMBL scientist. The upcoming seminar entitled Rhythms of Life – how cellular clocks function in development and disease” will be given by Dr. Alexander Aulehla, senior scientist and group leader at EMBL Heidelberg.

Clocks of the cells

Cellular clocks, or oscillators, are very abundant in nature. A well-known example is the circadian day-night clock that runs with a period of about 24 hours. In this EMBL Insight Lecture, Dr. Alexander Aulehla will introduce a different set of cellular clocks that operate with periods in the range of only 1-2 hours and which play important roles during embryonic development and in stem cells. These cellular clocks can, in addition, become highly coordinated between neighboring cells, which leads to very unexpected and fascinating collective cellular dynamics.

Dr. Alexander Aulehla will explain how we use modern microscopes to make these clock rhythms visible and how we address the underlying basic rules and functions of cellular rhythms.

More information on the concept behind EMBL Insight Lectures as well as videos on-demand of previous events may be found here.
