Industry services

EMBL Hamburg

We welcome industry projects from diverse backgrounds. We offer services on, experimental design, consulting  and data analysis.

The Sample Preparation and Characterisation (SPC) Core Facility at EMBL Hamburg provides optimum conditions and support for performing high-throughput crystallography and biophysical characterisation experiments, including sample preparation for experiments at EMBL beamlines, cutting-edge technologies to measure interactions and to precisely determine the stability, shape and size of different biomolecules and biomolecular assemblies.

We can recommend the most suitable biophysical techniques to answer the specific biological questions being investigated.

Experiments are custom designed to meet the needs of individual users, with all measurements performed by our highly skilled staff.

The EMBL Beamlines P13 and P14 on the PETRA III Synchrotron DESY, Hamburg provide optimum conditions for X-ray diffraction data collection:

Ultimate-quality data collection on large (>50 μm) crystals with a ‘top-hat’ profile beam.

  • Serial data collection on micro-crystals (< 10 μm) at cryogenic temperature or in situ in CrystalDirectTM plates.
  • Phasing by anomalous diffraction between 18 and 3.8 keV using standard mounting technologies.
  • Diffraction data collection from crystals with large unit cells (up to 2000 Å).
  • Sub-atomic resolution (< 0.8 Å) data collection.
  • Data collection on small molecule crystals.

Our services

We offer a pipeline for structure determination with various entry and exit points.

  • Beamtime only
  • Remote Access
  • Mail-in Data Collection
  • Collaborations

P12 is dedicated to scattering studies on solutions of biological macromolecules. SAXS allows the determination of the overall shapes, structural transitions and flexibility of proteins and complexes, enabling structural and time-resolved investigations of biological macromolecules and processes at different levels of organisation.

P12

  • Low divergence beam with 1013 phis (crystal monochromator) or 5*1014 phis (multilayer monochromator) into 100 x 200 µm2 focus
  • Low background setup with scatterless slits
  • Photon counting PILATUS 2M and EIGER 4M pixel detectors
  • Robotic sample changer with about 20 µI sample volume
  • Fully automated high throughput, mail-in and remote operation
  • Online chromatography (HPLC/FPLC) with parallel biophysical characterisation (light scattering, absorption, refraction)
  • Automated data processing and analysis pipeline rapidly providing the structural results
