Rome Fiumicino Airport

Train journey from Fiumicino Airport to EMBL Rome takes about 1.15 hours and costs 11€ one way using the FM1 train (see point 2 below). Tickets can be purchased at the airport train station ticket desk, via the station ticket machine or in advance, online: https://www.trenitalia.com/ or https://www.thetrainline.com/it/

There are two train line options from Fiumicino into Rome.

  1. the Leonardo Express non-stop train one goes directly to Rome’s Stazione Termini, the main train station. Journey time 30mins. Cost 14€ one way.
  2. the FM1 train Direction: Fara Sabina. This local commuter train runs from FCO airport, through Rome (Trastevere, Ostiense, Nomentana, Tuscolana, and Tiburtina stations), then outwards to Monterotondo-Mentana station and beyond. It stops at all the local stations along the way. Journey time FCO to Monterotondo takes 1.15 hours. Cost 11€ one way.

Fiumicino Airport has several car rental companies onsite. Distance is about 70 km from the airport to Monterotondo and driving time can take between 45 – 60mins depending on traffic / time of day.

Rome Ciampino Airport

Public transport from Rome Ciampino Airport to EMBL Rome takes about 1.30 hours. Take the Ryanair bus to Stazione Termini (45mins, costs 4€).

Timetable

From Stazione Termini, take the Metro underground (B line) to Stazione Tiburtina (11 mins, costs 1,50€).

From Stazione Tiburtina, take the FM1 train, Direction Fara Sabina, to Monterotondo-Mentana Station. (25 minutes, costs 2,10€.)

Ciampino Airport has several car rental companies onsite/nearby. Distance is about 50 km drive from the airport to Monterotondo and can take between 40 – 60mins depending on traffic / time of day.


Train

The FM1 (Direction: Fara Sabina) Commuter train runs through the Trastevere, Ostiense, Nomentana, Tuscolana, and Tiburtina train stations in Rome. The metro (B line) links to Stazione Tiburtina. From there, take the Fara Sabina train to Monterotondo-Mentana Station. Journey takes 25 minutes and costs 2,10€ one way. Tickets can be purchased online from: https://www.trenitalia.com/ or https://www.thetrainline.com/it/

The EMBL/CNR campus shuttle bus runs a time-limited service in the morning and evening.

Please note: there is no taxi service at Monterotondo train station. If you arrive during the working day, but outside of the campus shuttle schedule, then please call your contact at the lab to arrange for someone to collect you. If Visitors are planning to arrive on their first day at Monterotondo Train station after 17:00, then please contact the lab ahead of time to discuss options.


Car

It is about a 35 km drive from Rome to Monterotondo. Depending on the time of the day, journey time can take between 30 minutes (non-rush hour) to 1.5 hours.

Driving from Rome

Option 1: take the via Salaria (SS 4) to Monterotondo-Scalo. Drive through Scalo, staying on the Salaria. Follow the signs to the Zona Industriale towards the end of Scalo. At the large roundabout take the 3rd exit onto via Leonardo da Vinci. Continue straight, then at 1st roundabout, take 2nd exit (effectively continuing on v Leonardo da Vinci). Follow the road to the very end where there is another large roundabout. Take the 1st exit on right side onto via Ercole Ramarini. The campus is on your immediate left.

Option 2 (includes toll): take the via Salaria (SS4) towards Monterotondo. After Sette Bagni village there is a highway Autostrada entrance on left side (Autostrada A1 Direzione : Firenze). Take the autostrada, and then take the first exit called CastelNuovo di Porto. Toll cost is 0.90€. Exit the toll booth, turn right onto SS730 direzione Monterotondo. The viaduct takes you over the autostrada. Cross over the 1st roundabout, and continue straight over the river. At the 2nd roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto via Ercole Ramarini and the campus is found on the left hand side.


Taxi

A taxi trip will cost about 50€ from Rome and 80€ from the airports. Please note: as there is no taxi station in Monterotondo, drivers may charge the return fare as well.
