Travel

EMBL Hamburg is situated at the campus of DESY (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron) in Hamburg-Bahrenfeld. Hamburg is the second-largest city in Germany.

Tickets are available from vending machines at the train stations or directly from the bus driver. A three-day ticket or 24 hour group ticket are available for the whole of public transport system.

Hamburg Airport (Fuhlsbüttel)

Public transport

Take the S-Bahn at the Airport (line S1 ─ Blankenese /Wedel) to Othmarschen. From Othmarschen take Metrobus 1 to "DESY, Zum Hünengrab" (3.30€, 50 minutes).

Taxi

From airport to DESY campus (Notkestrasse 85) 40€, approx. 20-40 minutes.


Take the train to Hamburg-Altona, from there take either:

Public transport

Metrobus 1 (direction Schenefelder Holt) directly to the main entrance of DESY (bus stop Zum Hünengrab/DESY) (3.30€; 25 minutes) or take S-Bahn S1 or S11 (direction Blankenese/Wedel) to Othmarschen. From Othmarschen take Metrobus 1 (direction Schenefelder Holt) to DESY, Zum Hünengrab (3.30€; 15 minutes).

Taxi to DESY, Zum Hünengrab (15€; 20 minutes).


Car

From motorway A7, take the exit Bahrenfeld (near the Elbe tunnel). At the traffic lights, turn in a westerly direction towards 'Wedel' (B431).

After about 2 km, turn right into the Notkestrasse, where DESY is signposted. After about 500 m turn left into the main gate of DESY.
