Biography

Matthias Blum is the Software Project Leader for InterPro and Pfam, two protein sequence analysis resources developed and maintained at EMBL-EBI. InterPro integrates predictive models from multiple member databases to classify proteins into families, identify domains and key sites, and provide uniform functional annotation. Pfam is a curated collection of protein families represented by profile hidden Markov models and is used extensively for large-scale sequence annotation and comparative genomics.

He oversees the software and database systems underlying both resources, managing regular data releases and maintaining integration with partner databases.

Matthias joined EMBL-EBI in 2016 from the IGBMC in Strasbourg, where he worked as a bioinformatician developing qcGenomics, a platform for retrieval, visualisation and comparative analysis of large collections of functional genomics datasets, including ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq and Hi-C.
