{"id":8837,"date":"2016-12-08T13:11:32","date_gmt":"2016-12-08T12:11:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.embl.de\/?p=8837"},"modified":"2024-03-25T10:07:41","modified_gmt":"2024-03-25T09:07:41","slug":"1612-10th-pepc-course-hamburg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/events\/1612-10th-pepc-course-hamburg\/","title":{"rendered":"10th PEPC course in Hamburg"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>From the 12 \u2013 20 September, 20 students from across Europe and beyond came to EMBL in Hamburg for the 10th iteration of the EMBO-funded workshop on Protein Expression, Purification and Characterisation (PEPC). Since 1998 the PEPC course has been a regular part of EMBL\u2019s training programme and to mark the occasion the organisers invited tutors and students from the early days for a celebratory mini-symposium. Founding course organiser and EMBL alumnus Paul Tucker gave an entertaining talk looking back at the&nbsp; previous courses and how the programme has evolved along with developments in the field. Paul noted how many participants over the years have gone on to become PIs themselves, who have in turn encouraged their students to attend, or have returned as course tutors, indicating the value of the course. One encounter has been of particular benefit to Paul himself. \u201cOne participant from 2002, Preben Morth, then joined my group for his PhD, and went on to become a regular tutor as well as receiving the John Kendrew Award in June 2010,\u201d said Paul proudly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"vf-figure wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-8848\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"380\" class=\"vf-figure__image\" src=\"https:\/\/news.embl.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/161208-10th-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8848\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/161208-10th-1.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/161208-10th-1-300x184.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption class=\"vf-figure__caption\">Twenty students from across Europe and beyond came to Hamburg for the 10th iteration of the Protein Expression, Purification and Characterisation (PEPC) workshop. The course has always been oversubscribed, and with 250 applications, 2016 has been a record breaking year. Paul noted how difficult it has been to select the participants who would most benefit from the course from such a large pool of applicants, but how they always managed to pull together a good group. Alex McPherson from the University of California, who has also been teaching from 1998 onwards, felt that this year\u2019s course was one of the best yet. \u201cThe students were very keen and active,\u201d he said. \u201cWe had some great discussions together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"vf-figure wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-8851\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"380\" class=\"vf-figure__image\" src=\"https:\/\/news.embl.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/161208-10th-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8851\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/161208-10th-2.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/161208-10th-2-300x184.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption class=\"vf-figure__caption\">The course allowed ample time for fruitful discussions between tutors and students. PHOTO: EMBL\/Rosemary Wilson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The field of structural biology has also changed over the past 18 years. In her keynote talk, Teresa Bergfors from the University of Uppsala likened the efforts to crystallise a protein to human relationships. In the past, biochemists would make the protein, and specialised people like herself would crystallise them. If crystallisation failed, tensions built up between the biochemists and the crystallisation experts. Who was to blame for the failure: the protein, the biochemist or the crystalliser? It was necessary to build a positive relationship in order to be productive. Nowadays the students must master the whole pipeline and cannot \u2018blame\u2019 collaborators for failed experiments. \u201cYour left hand has to know what your right hand is doing,\u201d says current organiser EMBL group leader Rob Meijers. \u201cThe purpose of the course was always to get the students to have a go at everything. No kits \u2013 just back to the basics.\u201d Paul reminds the audience that the \u2018C\u2019 in \u2018PEPC\u2019 used to stand for \u2018Crystallisation\u2019 but how with time the process for understanding proteins has become much more than just crystallisation. This year\u2019s course also had a number of new additions to the programme.
