These life sciences data resources are delivered and managed by EMBL\u2019s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) alongside international partners. The financial support will be given in the shape of three grants through Horizon Europe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<article class=\"vf-card vf-card--brand vf-card--bordered vf-u-margin__bottom--800\" default>\n  \n  <div class=\"vf-card__content | vf-stack vf-stack--400\">\n          <h3 class=\"vf-card__heading\">\n        \n        Funded data resources\n              <\/h3>\n    \n    \n          <p class=\"vf-card__text\"><a class=\"vf-card__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gencodegenes.org\/\"><b>GENCODE<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(\u20ac19 million allocation)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"vf-card__text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">GENCODE provides high-quality annotation of human and mouse genomes, helping researchers interpret genetic information with precision. It is run by EMBL-EBI in partnership with the <\/span><a class=\"vf-card__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.crg.eu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"vf-card__text\"><a class=\"vf-card__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uniprot.org\/\"><b>UniProt<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (\u20ac30 million allocation)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"vf-card__text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">UniProt is the world\u2019s leading resource for comprehensive, high-quality, and freely accessible protein sequence and functional annotation data. It is managed through a long-standing partnership between EMBL-EBI, the <\/span><a class=\"vf-card__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sib.swiss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and the <\/span><a class=\"vf-card__link\" href=\"https:\/\/proteininformationresource.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Protein Information Resource<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"vf-card__text\"><a class=\"vf-card__link\" href=\"https:\/\/europepmc.org\/About\"><b>Europe PMC<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (\u20ac8 million allocation)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"vf-card__text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Europe PMC is an open-access repository providing access to millions of biomedical abstracts and full-text articles, directly linking scientific literature with core biological data. It is managed by EMBL-EBI and supported by <\/span><a class=\"vf-card__link\" href=\"https:\/\/europepmc.org\/governanceAndFunding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">an international coalition of science funders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n      <\/div>\n<\/article>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOpen data resources are essential for modern biology and for accelerating AI innovation in biotechnology. GENCODE, UniProt and Europe PMC are part of a global ecosystem of open data resources that scientists rely on every day,\u201d said EMBL Director General Anthony Hyman. \u201cWe are grateful to the European Commission for this critical investment. It will help ensure that reliable, openly available data continues to drive discovery and deliver practical benefits for science and society.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Impact on life sciences<\/strong> with a global network of support<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open data resources are the backbone of modern life sciences and are essential for ongoing and future biological and biomedical research. Every day, they help scientists worldwide unravel the genetic code, understand protein function, accelerate drug discovery, advance artificial intelligence-enabled discovery, and support research on biodiversity and antimicrobial resistance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While this \u20ac57 million package focuses on three critical data resources, EMBL-EBI\u2019s broader mission includes over 30 open biological data resources that are essential to academic research and innovation in biotechnology. Maintaining these critical platforms relies on strong, continuous backing from a broad range of funders and partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEMBL-EBI relies on support from EMBL member states and a broad range of international funders and collaborators,\u201d said Jo McEntyre, Interim Director of EMBL-EBI.&nbsp;\u201cWe are very grateful to all our funders for helping us make the world\u2019s biological data accessible to researchers worldwide.
