Researchers from EMBL, EMBL alumni based in Poland, and scientists from institutions across the country shared their latest work and explored new opportunities for collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event was hosted by the Nencki Institute and supported by EMERALD, a strategic project implemented by the Nencki Institute and commissioned by Poland&#8217;s Minister of Science and Higher Education. EMERALD supports collaborations between EMBL and EMBO and the wider Polish scientific community by providing funds for researchers to carry out scientific visits, and for organising joint workshops and symposia in Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The programme featured speakers from EMBL and institutions across Poland, covering topics such as cell biology, epigenetics, and\u00a0RNA biology, as well as training and exchange opportunities offered by EMBL. The event closed with a compelling and inspirational plenary by Director of EMBL-EBI Ewan Birney, who shared his vision of how genomics, imaging, and AI are transforming life sciences research, and of <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/DHifkrYjoiA?si=bJpUceOvKOGT3EN4\">EMBL&#8217;s role<\/a> in shaping that future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the \u2018EMBL in\u2026\u2019 events, EMBL engages with science communities in its member states, shares latest developments, and highlights research and resources available locally, facilitating exchange and collaboration across borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"a1\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How scientists in Poland benefit from EMBL<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several participants of the event shared how EMBL and its ties with Poland have benefited their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Urszula McClurg is relocating her research group from the University of Liverpool to the Institute of Medical Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (<a href=\"https:\/\/ibmpan.pl\/en\/\">IMB PAS<\/a>) in \u0141\u00f3d\u017a. She has received an EMBO Installation Grant as well as funding from the Polish government to study meiotic genes and their role in cancer. Her group\u2019s work depends heavily on proteomics, and access to EMBL&#8217;s Proteomics Core Facility has been essential. She believes the connection with EMBL and EMBO is very beneficial to scientists and wishes for it to develop further across Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"vf-grid | vf-grid__col-2\"><div><!--[vf\/content]-->\n<div class=\"vf-content\">\n\n<div class=\"vf-embed vf-embed--16x9 | vf-u-margin__bottom--400\">\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BuNNOcfeed4?si=rOKz2JMOuX-XGN2h\" frameborder=\"0\" controls allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div><!--[vf\/content]-->\n<div class=\"vf-content\">\n\n<blockquote class=\"vf-blockquote-small | vf-u-margin__bottom--600 vf-u-margin__top--600\">\n  <div>\n    <div>\n      <p><em>The access [to EMBL facilities] has been transformational for our work and for our ability to deliver good science.<\/em><\/p>\n    <\/div>\n    \n          <footer class=\"vf-u-margin__top--600\">\n      \n      <div class=\"vf-blockquote_author\">\n        Urszula McClurg, Group Leader at IMB PAS in \u0141\u00f3d\u017a      <\/div>\n\n      \n      <div class=\"vf-blockquote_author__details\"><\/div>\n    <\/footer>\n      <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EMBL Hamburg alumnus Nishit Goradia recently moved to Warsaw to start his own research group at the International Institute of Molecular Mechanisms and Machines of the Polish Academy of Sciences (<a href=\"https:\/\/imol.institute\/\">IMol PAS<\/a>) in Warsaw. Building on his postdoctoral work in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/science-technology\/invisible-protein-keeps-cancer-at-bay\/\">integrative structural biology and cancer<\/a>, he plans to shift to cell biology and investigate the molecular mechanisms of transcriptional regulation through protein assembly. That same year, EMBL launched its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/lab-matters\/embl-partners-with-braincity\/\">partnership<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/braincity.nencki.edu.pl\/\">BRAINCITY<\/a>, the Centre of Excellence for Neural Plasticity and Brain Disorders at the Nencki Institute.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poland&#8217;s path to membership developed over decades. From the 1990s onwards, leading scientists in Poland pushed for closer ties with EMBL, and their efforts gradually led to full membership in 2019. Former EMBL Director General Iain Mattaj reflected on how Poland benefits from close connections with the organisation today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"vf-grid |
