Upon invitation of Iain Mattaj, EMBL\u2019s Director General, 140 participants from the worlds of science, business and politics came together for this benefit event.&nbsp;Among the invited guests&nbsp;were also&nbsp;a group of EMBL Teens \u2013 the youngest members of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/leben\/friends\">Friends Programme<\/a> \u2013 who had the opportunity to directly interact with EMBL researchers and supporters.<b>&nbsp;<\/b>EMBL&#8217;s ocean biodiversity research was the central theme, thus the scene was set with \u201cgreen algae\u201d streaming down from the ceiling high above. PHOTO: EMBL\/Hugo Neves<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Much of the action&nbsp;pivoted around the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/tara-oceans\/start\/\">Tara Ocean<\/a> expedition, a four-year journey around the world that has enabled researchers to learn much more about crucial plankton species in the world\u2019s oceans. These hidden depths were explored during a panel discussion featuring EMBL\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/research\/units\/scb\/members\/index.php?s_personId=CP-60003241\">Peer Bork<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/research\/units\/scb\/bork\/members\/index.php?s_personId=CP-60003231\">Steffi Kandels-Lewis<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/research\/units\/directors_research\/karsenti\/members\/index.php?s_personId=CP-60003211\">Eric Karsenti<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/services\/core_facilities\/members\/index.php?s_personId=CP-60003201\">Rainer Pepperkok<\/a>, moderated by Volker Mosbrugger, Director General of Senckenberg. This followed an inspirational speech by Herbert Nitsch, the world\u2019s free-diving record holder&nbsp;\u2013 also known as \u2018the deepest man on Earth\u2019. Guests were regaled with fine food created by EMBL\u2019s head chef Michael Hansen. PHOTO: EMBL\/Marietta Schupp<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The gala, which was organised by EMBL\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/aboutus\/support-embl\/office-of-resource-development\/index.html\">Office of Resource Development<\/a>, also featured images from the <a href=\"http:\/\/arts.embl.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Life in Perspective exhibition<\/a> \u2013 3D portraits of plankton from the Tara Ocean samples photographed by EMBL\u2019s Sebastien Colin.
