He has chosen to return to fundamental research, leveraging his expertise and industry perspective to support the French site&#8217;s activities and ambitions. We had a chance to chat with him about his insights on turning strategy into action, bringing people and teams together, and why successful transformation is as much about people as it is about processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is your academic and professional background?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I graduated from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grenoble-em.com\/en\/\">GEM Alpine Business School<\/a> with an MBA in Project Management and began my career as a PMO&nbsp; (Project Management Office)&nbsp; consultant and Agile coach, working across the research, energy, and insurance sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following this, I spent seven years at <a href=\"https:\/\/diagnostics.roche.com\/fr\/fr\/home.html\">Roche Diagnostics<\/a> in roles including PMO Manager and Strategy Delivery Lead, focused on turning strategy into action and improving organisational effectiveness. I also led major transformation programmes across organisational structures, governance, and ways of working, learning that successful transformation depends as much on bringing people along as it does on designing the right processes.&nbsp; At the heart of my many profiles was a simple objective: turning strategy into action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Can you tell me more about your role at EMBL Grenoble?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I like to describe my role quite simply: we support science by taking care of everything that is not science!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Head of Administration and Operations at EMBL Grenoble, I work closely with the Head of Site Kristina Djinovic-Carugo and our local management team to help create the conditions for the site to run smoothly and effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A central part of my role is supporting the Administration and Operations team and creating the best possible environment for their success. By enabling the team to do their best work, we can, in turn, provide the best possible support to science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our responsibilities span a wide range of activities, from safety, procurement, human resources, travel, and events to buildings and facilities, communications, stakeholder engagement, and relationships with our institutional partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond Grenoble, I work closely with colleagues across EMBL, including central functions in Heidelberg and my counterparts at the other European sites. This collaboration allows us to share knowledge and good practices, strengthen connections across the organisation, and identify opportunities to work more effectively together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What do you think is the most exciting thing about your work?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I really enjoy bringing people, teams, and functions together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In particular, identifying opportunities to create interactions and turning them into effective ways of working is one of the most rewarding aspects of my role. At the same time, while I am not a scientist myself, I am genuinely fascinated by science. In the end, being able to contribute, in my own way, to an environment where impactful discoveries happen is incredibly rewarding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s the best part of working at EMBL?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No two days are the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is always something new to learn, a different challenge to tackle or an opportunity to improve how we work. It is a dynamic environment that constantly encourages you to learn, adapt, and grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am also very fond of scientific stories and anecdotes that connect research with society and show its tangible impact. In that respect, I was particularly excited to join a site whose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/topics\/coronavirus\/\">scientists actively contributed to COVID-19 research<\/a> during the pandemic. It is a great example of how fundamental research can ultimately make a substantial difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is the book or movie you are most likely to recommend to people you meet?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For books, I&#8217;d recommend <em>Flowers for Algernon<\/em> by Daniel Keyes, and for those who enjoy fantasy, <em>Gagner la Guerre<\/em> by Jean-Philippe Jaworski. Although they are very different books, both have left a lasting impression on me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s the best advice you were ever given in pursuing your field?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It&#8217;s pointless to move fast if, when you look back, nobody is following you.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To me, leadership is not about getting ahead on your own \u2013 it&#8217;s about bringing people with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is the best meal you\u2019ve ever had in your life<\/strong>?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the simplest meals are the best: fresh shrimps, good bread and salted butter.
