{"id":80525,"date":"2026-07-27T15:22:41","date_gmt":"2026-07-27T13:22:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/?p=80525"},"modified":"2026-07-27T15:22:45","modified_gmt":"2026-07-27T13:22:45","slug":"european-researchers-night-2026-a-festival-of-science-and-curiosity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/connections\/european-researchers-night-2026-a-festival-of-science-and-curiosity\/","title":{"rendered":"European Researchers\u2019 Night 2026: A festival of science and curiosity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next edition of the European Researchers\u2019 Night \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.org\/festival-of-science\"><em>Festival of Science and Curiosity<\/em><\/a><em> | <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.org\/festival-der-wissenschaft\"><em>Festival der Wissenschaft und Neugier<\/em><\/a> \u2013 will take place on 25 September 2026, from 15:00 to 22:00, on the EMBL Heidelberg campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EMBL and Merck are already partners on a number of projects, e.g. funding support of EMBL\u2019s teacher training programme through Merck\u2019s Signature Partnerships. Now, the two partners have been selected to host European Researchers\u2019 Night (ERN) as part of the Marie Sk\u0142odowska-Curie Actions <a href=\"https:\/\/marie-sklodowska-curie-actions.ec.europa.eu\/actions\/msca-and-citizens\">(MSCA)<\/a> funding call of the European Union. The funding call has two strands: the European Researchers\u2019 Night events and the Researchers at Schools programme, which will be run by Merck with their Curiosity Cube&#x2122; mobile science lab visiting schools across Europe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Festival is free to attend and will welcome around 1,000 visitors of all ages to experience science up close, ask questions of the people behind the science, and explore the fascinating world of research. The programme will include demonstrations, hands-on activities, exhibitions, campus tours, laboratory visits, and opportunities to meet and talk with EMBL scientists. Food trucks and free shuttle buses will be available for the guests. Local research and cultural organisations will also be present to showcase the varied STEM ecosystem of the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visitors can look forward to interactive games, microscopy experiments, escape room experiences, creative workshops, and science demonstrations designed to spark curiosity and conversation. The Festival will also connect science, art, and exchange through the Theatre of Curiosity, featuring panel discussions, short talks, and theatre performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A special highlight will be Merck\u2019s Curiosity Cube&#x2122;, an interactive mobile science lab that travels around the world and will stop at EMBL Heidelberg for the event. Visitors will be able to take part in hands-on experiments, explore cutting-edge technologies, and step into the role of researchers for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe European Researchers\u2019 Night is a wonderful opportunity to build bridges between science and society,\u201d said Briony Jackson, Head of Science Education and Public Engagement at EMBL and programme lead for the European Researchers\u2019 Night 2026\/27. \u201cAt EMBL, we believe that everyone \u2013 regardless of age or background \u2013 should have the chance to explore the fascinating world of molecular biology. This event is our invitation to the public to visit our labs, meet our researchers, and discover how science shapes our everyday lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matthias Buerk, Darmstadt Site Head of Merck, added, \u201cAt Merck, inspiring the next generation of scientists and fostering the joy of discovery is close to our hearts. The Curiosity Cube&#x2122; is more than just a mobile science lab; it is a gateway to hands-on science that sparks curiosity. It shows young people that they, too, can be part of the STEM future.
