We spoke with her about her career, the challenges of managing rapidly growing biological data, and how open data resources are shaping the future of life sciences in the age of AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is your background?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>My background is in biotechnology.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I was looking for PhD programmes, I came across EMBL-EBI, so I applied and got the opportunity to start building my knowledge in bioinformatics. I joined the Functional Genomics team, then led by Alvis Brazma. My PhD focused on RNA sequencing, which was an emerging technology at the time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/training\/\">training environment at EMBL-EBI<\/a> is particularly strong, making it a great place to build bioinformatics expertise, especially for early-career researchers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since completing my PhD, I\u2019ve spent over 15 years working across academia and industry, including in roles at Illumina in the UK, the Genome Institute of Singapore and, more recently, at NalaGenetics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the European Nucleotide Archive (ENA) and why is it important?&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/ena\/browser\/home\">European Nucleotide Archive<\/a> (ENA) is an open archive for nucleotide sequence data where scientists submit, access, and reuse datasets from sequencing experiments. It is one of the oldest and largest resources at EMBL-EBI, established in the 1980s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It now holds close to 100 petabytes of data. The volume of data is growing rapidly, and doubling approximately every three years. To put that into perspective, continuously streaming that volume of data would take 4,500 years to watch.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ENA is considered critical infrastructure for the life sciences, recognised by initiatives such as <a href=\"https:\/\/elixir-europe.org\/about-us\/who-we-are\/nodes\/embl-ebi\">ELIXIR<\/a> and the Global Biodata Coalition. It\u2019s also part of the International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration (INSDC), ensuring global access and long-term data preservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is BioSamples?&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/biosamples\/\">BioSamples<\/a> is a more recent resource that acts as a central hub for biological sample data. It captures information about the samples used in life science experiments in a standardised way.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With recent advances in multi-omics technologies, its importance is growing as a linking resource. A single sample may generate multiple types of data such as genomics, transcriptomics, or proteomics, which are often stored across different archives. BioSamples links these together, enabling better data discovery and integration across resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">As team leader of ENA and BioSamples, what are your main priorities?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the team\u2019s top priorities is delivering an excellent user experience: from data submission to discovery and retrieval. We need to support the communities that submit data, from individual researchers to large-scale consortia, by making submission routes clear, scalable, and aligned with community standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another goal is maintaining and strengthening ENA\u2019s global role, both through collaboration and engagement with scientific communities. These include areas like pathogen surveillance and biodiversity initiatives such as the Darwin Tree of Life.&nbsp; International coordination is essential because nucleotide sequence data are a global scientific asset. Through our work with the INSDC, we help ensure that data submitted in one region can be found, interpreted, and reused worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, managing the rapid growth of data is a major challenge. With volumes increasing so quickly, developing sustainable ways to store, manage, and provide access to these data is critical.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, my priority is to ensure that ENA and BioSamples remain trusted, resilient, and sustainable public resources, supported by strong community engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does the open data available at EMBL-EBI contribute to scientific discovery?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Open data is fundamental to the scientific process. It enables reproducibility, builds trust, and ensures that researchers worldwide have equal access to the same information. It also accelerates discovery by allowing scientists to reuse existing datasets.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is something I experienced during my PhD, when I was able to complete my research using openly available datasets. This really brought home the importance of open data sharing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For data to be truly reusable, they also need to be well described. High-quality metadata, such as the information we aim to capture in BioSamples and ENA, provide the biological and experimental context that allows others to interpret and build on those data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, our data resources at EMBL-EBI support the life sciences by being open and democratising access to data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you see ENA and BioSamples integrating AI?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the near future, we believe that integrating AI will improve user experience \u2013 for example, through AI-assisted data submission, better metadata capture, and more intuitive search capabilities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the longer term, resources like ENA and BioSamples have the potential to evolve from data archives into structured knowledge bases. They can support the development and training of AI systems using high-quality and accessible datasets to drive scientific discovery.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do you enjoy doing outside of bioinformatics?&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I have two young children, so much of my time is spent with family. We enjoy being outdoors when possible, and when the weather doesn\u2019t allow it, we love playing board games together. There are so many great kids\u2019 board games out there, and I\u2019ve been getting many good recommendations from my colleagues at the EBI.
