{"id":75875,"date":"2025-08-08T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/?p=75875"},"modified":"2026-02-24T14:55:46","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T13:55:46","slug":"a-new-boost-for-cryozoo-barcelonas-animal-cell-biobank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/science-technology\/a-new-boost-for-cryozoo-barcelonas-animal-cell-biobank\/","title":{"rendered":"A new boost for CryoZoo, Barcelona\u2019s animal cell biobank"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Joint press release EMBL-UPF<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Barcelona<a href=\"https:\/\/cryozoo.org\/\"> CryoZoo<\/a> is a one-of-a-kind project aiming to safeguard and study biological material from a wide range of animal species \u2013 especially those at risk of extinction \u2013 in order to preserve and better understand the planet\u2019s biodiversity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born out of an initiative by the <a href=\"https:\/\/zoobarcelona.cat\/en\/foundation\/barcelona-zoo-foundation?language=en\">Barcelona Zoo Foundation<\/a>, a space managed by BSM through the Barcelona Zoo Foundation, and that is developed jointly with University Pompeu Fabra (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upf.edu\/web\/centre-planetary-wellbeing\/\">UPF<\/a>),<a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/barcelona\"> EMBL Barcelona<\/a>, and the<a href=\"https:\/\/museuciencies.cat\/es\/\"> Natural Science Museum of Barcelona<\/a>, CryoZoo has now been awarded a competitive grant from the wildlife conservation organisation Revive &amp; Restore. This support will allow the project to take a significant step forward in deriving and studying stem cell lines from wild animal species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), over 47,000 species worldwide are currently threatened with extinction \u2013 an imminent loss of global biodiversity and associated loss of scientific knowledge. Conservation biology initiatives like CryoZoo aim to preserve the biological material of endangered species to ensure their long-term survival and support biodiversity research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile we still have living representatives of these highly endangered species, we must act to preserve their biodiversity. Having access to living biomaterials allows us to study these animals in depth without disturbing individuals in captivity, and helps us find new solutions for their conservation,\u201d said <strong>Tom\u00e0s Marqu\u00e8s-Bonet<\/strong>, ICREA Research Professor at the UPF Department of Medicine and Life Sciences, researcher at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology (CSIC-UPF), and Director of CryoZoo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Founded four years ago, the Barcelona CryoZoo is part of the Barcelona Zoo\u2019s biobank (along with the Tissue Bank at the Autonomous University of Barcelona) and specialises in storing animal cell lines. The project currently holds over 2,000 samples from 297 different species, including reptiles, mammals, amphibians, and fish. But CryoZoo\u2019s mission extends far beyond simply storing biological material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat makes CryoZoo unique is that we not only conserve cell lines, we also perform a complete molecular characterisation, including whole-genome sequencing, transcriptome profiling (which genes are active), and chromosomal mapping,\u201d explained <strong>Cira Mart\u00ednez<\/strong>, researcher at EMBL Barcelona and Coordinator of CryoZoo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This molecular data forms a repository accessible to the global scientific community (upon approval from CryoZoo\u2019s scientific and ethics committee) and positions CryoZoo as a leading contributor to IUCN\u2019s Animal Biobanking Working Group, alongside institutions like the San Diego Zoo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To date, CryoZoo has preserved more than <strong>350 cell lines<\/strong>, including <strong>seven induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) lines<\/strong> reprogrammed from tissue samples, <strong>37 karyotypes<\/strong>, and <strong>genome sequences from 163 species<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Advancing stem cell reprogramming in wild species<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A central aim of CryoZoo is to derive iPSCs \u2013 induced pluripotent stem cells \u2013 from wild animal species, enabling <em>in vitro<\/em> studies that minimise the need for live animal research. Until now, cell reprogramming techniques have relied on gene combinations already proven effective in humans. As a result, successful iPSC lines have only been established from a few species closely related to humans, such as certain primates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, thanks to new funding from <em>Revive &amp; Restore<\/em>, the UPF-led team will use machine learning and artificial intelligence tools to analyse gene activity involved in the cellular reprogramming process across multiple species. This will allow the researchers to identify which genes are key to reprogramming cell fate in each species and develop custom gene cocktails to create stem cells from wild and endangered species, with tissue samples provided by accredited zoos and aquariums. It is a global leader in advocating for the integration of biotechnology into conservation practices. Its programs explore a variety of technologies, with the latest focused on using stem cell techniques to study wildlife diseases and engineer resilience in a rapidly changing world.\r\nIn December 2024, Revive &#038; Restore launched a global call for groundbreaking projects in cellular reprogramming aimed at supporting wildlife reproduction and disease mitigation. Out of 50 proposals submitted from around the world, only four were selected for funding \u2013 including the Barcelona CryoZoo.<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n<\/article>\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"vf-divider\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"catalan\">Un nou impuls per al CryoZoo: el biobanc de c\u00e8l\u00b7lules animals de Barcelona<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">El Barcelona CryoZoo, el projecte liderat per la Fundaci\u00f3 Barcelona Zoo conjuntament amb la Universitat Pompeu Fabra, el Laboratori Europeu de Biologia Molecular a Barcelona i el Museu de Ci\u00e8ncies Naturals de Barcelona, rep un ajut de l\u2019organitzaci\u00f3 internacional Revive &amp; Restore, per estudiar i millorar la re<em>programaci\u00f3 de c\u00e8l\u00b7lules mare d\u2019animals salvatges.<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>El Barcelona<a href=\"https:\/\/cryozoo.org\/\"> CryoZoo<\/a> \u00e9s un projecte \u00fanic al m\u00f3n que pret\u00e9n <strong>salvaguardar i estudiar biomaterial de m\u00faltiples esp\u00e8cies animals<\/strong> \u2013especialment aquelles m\u00e9s amena\u00e7ades\u2013 per tal de <strong>preservar i con\u00e8ixer en profunditat la diversitat animal al planeta<\/strong>. Ara, gr\u00e0cies a haver aconseguit un projecte competitiu de l\u2019organitzaci\u00f3 per conservar la fauna silvestre, Revive &amp; Restore podr\u00e0 fer un pas m\u00e9s en l\u2019estudi i l\u2019obtenci\u00f3 de l\u00ednies de c\u00e8l\u00b7lules mare provinents d\u2019esp\u00e8cies d\u2019animals salvatges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Segons la llista vermella de la Uni\u00f3 Internacional per a la Conservaci\u00f3 de la Natura (IUCN, per les seves sigles en angl\u00e8s) al m\u00f3n hi ha 47.000 esp\u00e8cies en perill d\u2019extinci\u00f3, fet que suposa una gran amena\u00e7a per a la biodiversitat del planeta i ens aboca a una p\u00e8rdua de coneixement imminent. Per aix\u00f2, des de la biologia de la conservaci\u00f3 sorgeixen iniciatives com el CryoZoo, que busquen estudiar i preservar el material biol\u00f2gic d\u2019esp\u00e8cies en perill d\u2019extinci\u00f3 per conservar la biodiversitat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAra que encara tenim alguns exemplars de les esp\u00e8cies m\u00e9s amena\u00e7ades, cal fer accions per preservar aquesta biodiversitat. Tenir biomaterial viu d\u2019aquestes esp\u00e8cies ens permet estudiar-les millor sense molestar els individus en captivitat i buscar noves solucions per a la seva conservaci\u00f3\u201d, comenta <strong>Tom\u00e0s Marqu\u00e8s-Bonet<\/strong>, catedr\u00e0tic i investigador ICREA al Departament de Medicina i Ci\u00e8ncies de la Vida de la UPF, tamb\u00e9 investigador a l\u2019Institut de Biologia Evolutiva (CSIC-UPF) i director del CryoZoo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El Barcelona CryoZoo forma part del biobanc del Zoo de Barcelona (juntament amb el Banc de Teixits de la UAB) i \u00e9s un biobanc de l\u00ednies de c\u00e8l\u00b7lules animals que va n\u00e9ixer fa quatre anys a la ciutat. El projecte ja salvaguarda m\u00e9s de 2.000 mostres de 297 esp\u00e8cies diferents de r\u00e8ptils, mam\u00edfers, amfibis i peixos. Per\u00f2 aquesta iniciativa va m\u00e9s enll\u00e0 de la mera voluntat d\u2019emmagatzemar material biol\u00f2gic. \u201cLa singularitat del CryoZoo \u00e9s que, a banda de conservar l\u00ednies cel\u00b7lulars, en fem una caracteritzaci\u00f3 completa i estudiem tot el seu genoma, el transcriptoma \u2013els gens que estan actius\u2013 i la seva composici\u00f3 cromos\u00f2mica\u201d, explica <strong>Cira Mart\u00ednez<\/strong>, investigadora de l\u2019EMBL Barcelona i coordinadora del projecte. Aix\u00ed, el CryoZoo <strong>conserva<\/strong> no nom\u00e9s<strong> material biol\u00f2gic<\/strong> sin\u00f3 <strong>bases de dades moleculars<\/strong>, que permeten construir un repositori que, amb el vistiplau del comit\u00e8 cient\u00edfic i \u00e8tic del CryoZoo, \u00e9s <strong>accessible per a tota la comunitat cient\u00edfica<\/strong> que el vulgui estudiar. L\u2019impuls d\u2019aquesta iniciativa en l\u2019entorn internacional ha fet que sigui un dels promotors del grup de treball a la IUCN sobre biobancs d\u2019animals, juntament amb el Zoo de San Diego.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ara mateix, aquest biobanc ja emmagatzema m\u00e9s de 350 l\u00ednies cel\u00b7lulars \u20137 de les quals s\u00f3n de c\u00e8l\u00b7lules mare pluripotents indu\u00efdes (iPSC) reprogramades a partir de mostres de teixit\u2013, 37 cariotips i la seq\u00fc\u00e8ncia del genoma de 163 esp\u00e8cies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Un nou impuls per reprogramar c\u00e8l\u00b7lules mare d\u2019esp\u00e8cies salvatges<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Un dels objectius del CryoZoo \u00e9s obtenir c\u00e8l\u00b7lules mare pluripotents indu\u00efdes d\u2019esp\u00e8cies d\u2019animals salvatges per poder-les estudiar al laboratori, tenint un model d\u2019estudi <em>in vitro<\/em> i minimitzant els estudis amb animals. Fins ara, la <strong>generaci\u00f3 de c\u00e8l\u00b7lules mare per reprogramaci\u00f3<\/strong> s\u2019ha fet utilitzant una combinaci\u00f3 de gens que ha donat bons resultats en humans. Per aix\u00f2, nom\u00e9s s\u2019han pogut generar, amb \u00e8xit, l\u00ednies d\u2019iPSC a partir de mostres de teixit d\u2019un petit nombre d\u2019esp\u00e8cies, la majoria molt properes a l\u2019esp\u00e8cie humana, com ara algunes esp\u00e8cies de primats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ara, a trav\u00e9s de la UPF, el CryoZoo ha rebut un ajut de l\u2019organitzaci\u00f3 sense \u00e0nim de lucre<a href=\"https:\/\/reviverestore.org\/\"> Revive &amp; Restore<\/a> (R&amp;R), per utilitzar <strong>t\u00e8cniques d\u2019aprenentatge autom\u00e0tic<\/strong> i <strong>intel\u00b7lig\u00e8ncia artificial<\/strong>, per estudiar l\u2019<strong>activitat dels gens involucrats en la reprogramaci\u00f3 cel\u00b7lular<\/strong> en m\u00faltiples esp\u00e8cies. Aix\u00ed podran identificar quins gens juguen un paper clau en la reprogramaci\u00f3 cel\u00b7lular en cada esp\u00e8cie i generar <strong>combinacions \u00faniques de gens<\/strong> per a la reprogramaci\u00f3 amb \u00e8xit de c\u00e8l\u00b7lules provinents de mostres d\u2019<strong>esp\u00e8cies salvatges i amena\u00e7ades<\/strong> cedides pels zoos i aquaris. A m\u00e9s, \u00e9s l\u2019organitzaci\u00f3 l\u00edder en la promoci\u00f3 de la introducci\u00f3 de pr\u00e0ctiques biotecnol\u00f2giques en la biologia de la conservaci\u00f3. L\u2019organitzaci\u00f3 compta amb m\u00faltiples programes, el m\u00e9s nou dels quals explora les tecnologies basades en l\u2019\u00fas de c\u00e8l\u00b7lules mare per estudiar les malalties dels animals salvatges i fer enginyeria per millorar la resili\u00e8ncia en aquest m\u00f3n canviant.\r\n\r\nEl desembre del 2024 Revive &#038; Restore va fer una primera crida internacional per finan\u00e7ar projectes i aconseguir aven\u00e7os revolucionaris en la reprogramaci\u00f3 per facilitar la reproducci\u00f3 i la mitigaci\u00f3 de malalties de la fauna silvestre. Por eso, desde la biolog\u00eda de la conservaci\u00f3n surgen iniciativas como el CryoZoo, que buscan estudiar y preservar el material biol\u00f3gico de especies en peligro de extinci\u00f3n para conservar la biodiversidad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAhora que todav\u00eda tenemos algunos ejemplares de las especies m\u00e1s amenazadas, hay que llevar a cabo acciones para preservar esta biodiversidad. Tener biomaterial vivo de estas especies nos permite estudiarlas mejor sin molestar los individuos en cautividad y buscar nuevas soluciones para su conservaci\u00f3n\u201d, comenta <strong>Tom\u00e0s Marqu\u00e8s-Bonet<\/strong>, catedr\u00e1tico e investigador ICREA en el Departamento de Medicina y Ciencias de la Vida de la UPF, tambi\u00e9n investigador en el Instituto de Biolog\u00eda Evolutiva (CSIC-UPF) y director del CryoZoo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El Barcelona CryoZoo forma parte del biobanco del Zoo de Barcelona (junto con el Banco de Tejidos de la UAB) y es un biobanco de l\u00edneas de c\u00e9lulas animales que naci\u00f3 hace cuatro a\u00f1os en la ciudad. El proyecto ya salvaguarda m\u00e1s de 2.000 muestras de 297 especies diferentes de reptiles, mam\u00edferos, anfibios y peces. Pero esta iniciativa va m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de la mera voluntad de almacenar material biol\u00f3gico. \u201cLa singularidad del CryoZoo es que, adem\u00e1s de conservar l\u00edneas celulares, realizamos una caracterizaci\u00f3n completa y estudiamos todo su genoma, el transcriptoma \u2013los genes que est\u00e1n activos\u2013 y su composici\u00f3n cromos\u00f3mica\u201d, explica <strong>Cira Mart\u00ednez<\/strong>, investigadora de la EMBL Barcelona y coordinadora del proyecto. As\u00ed, el CryoZoo conserva no solo <strong>material biol\u00f3gico<\/strong> sino <strong>bases de datos moleculares<\/strong>, que permiten construir un repositorio que, con el visto bueno del comit\u00e9 cient\u00edfico y \u00e9tico del CryoZoo, es accesible para toda la comunidad cient\u00edfica que lo quiera estudiar. El impulso de esta iniciativa en el entorno internacional ha hecho que sea uno de los promotores del grupo de trabajo de la IUCN sobre biobancos de animales, junto con el Zoo de San Diego.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahora mismo, este biobanco ya almacena m\u00e1s de 350 l\u00edneas celulares \u20137 de las cuales son de c\u00e9lulas madre pluripotentes inducidas (iPSC) reprogramadas a partir de muestras de tejido\u2013, 37 cariotipos y la secuencia del genoma de 163 especies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Un nuevo impulso para reprogramar c\u00e9lulas madre de especies salvajes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Uno de los objetivos del CryoZoo es obtener c\u00e9lulas madre pluripotentes inducidas de especies de animales salvajes para poderlas estudiar en el laboratorio, teniendo un modelo de estudio <em>in vitro<\/em> y minimizando los estudios con animales. Hasta ahora, la generaci\u00f3n de c\u00e9lulas madre por reprogramaci\u00f3n se ha hecho utilizando una combinaci\u00f3n de genes que ha dado buenos resultados en humanos. Por eso, solo se han podido generar, con \u00e9xito, l\u00edneas de iPSC a partir de muestras de tejido de un peque\u00f1o n\u00famero de especies, la mayor\u00eda muy pr\u00f3ximas a la especie humana, como por ejemplo algunas especies de primates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Actualmente, a trav\u00e9s de la UPF, el CryoZoo ha recibido una ayuda de la organizaci\u00f3n sin \u00e1nimo de lucro <a href=\"https:\/\/reviverestore.org\/\">Revive &amp; Restore<\/a> (R&amp;R), para utilizar <strong>t\u00e9cnicas de aprendizaje autom\u00e1tico e inteligencia artificial<\/strong>, para estudiar la <strong>actividad de los genes involucrados en la reprogramaci\u00f3n celular<\/strong> en m\u00faltiples especies. As\u00ed podr\u00e1n identificar qu\u00e9 genes juegan un papel clave en la reprogramaci\u00f3n celular en cada especie y generar <strong>combinaciones \u00fanicas de genes<\/strong> para la reprogramaci\u00f3n con \u00e9xito de c\u00e9lulas provenientes de muestras de <strong>especies salvajes y amenazadas<\/strong> cedidas por los zoos y acuarios. La organizaci\u00f3n cuenta con m\u00faltiples programas, el m\u00e1s reciente de los cuales explora las tecnolog\u00edas basadas en el uso de c\u00e9lulas madre para estudiar las enfermedades de los animales salvajes y hacer ingenier\u00eda para mejorar la resiliencia en este mundo cambiante.\r\n\r\nEn diciembre de 2024 Revive &#038; Restore hizo un primer llamamiento internacional para financiar proyectos y conseguir avances revolucionarios en la reprogramaci\u00f3n para facilitar la reproducci\u00f3n y la mitigaci\u00f3n de enfermedades de la fauna silvestre.
