{"id":7211,"date":"2016-06-13T15:41:50","date_gmt":"2016-06-13T13:41:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.embl.de\/?p=7211"},"modified":"2024-03-25T10:22:53","modified_gmt":"2024-03-25T09:22:53","slug":"1606-time-resolved","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/science\/1606-time-resolved\/","title":{"rendered":"Leading the way in time-resolved crystallography"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Together with Arwen Pearson from the Hamburg Centre for Ultrafast Imaging (CUI) at&nbsp;<span class=\"s1\">Universit\u00e4t Hamburg<\/span>, EMBL group leader <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl-hamburg.de\/research\/unit\/schneider\/index.html\">Thomas Schneider<\/a> and his team are laying the groundwork to establish a programme of research, development and user services dedicated to time-resolved crystallography at the PETRA III light source on the DESY campus in Hamburg. A grant of 2 million Euro recently awarded by Germany\u2019s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) will in part be used to extend the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl-hamburg.de\/services\/mx\/P14\/index.html\">EMBL crystallography beamline P14<\/a> to include a dedicated time-resolved crystallography endstation &#8211;&nbsp; making the experimental set-up more efficient and versatile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTime-resolved crystallography is ideal for studying biotechnology at the molecular scale\u201d adds Schneider. \u201cWe are seeing a lot of interest from biotechnologists studying interesting proteins which may one day lead to new applications in the fields of agriculture, food and environmental science. We are looking forward to helping our users carry out this fascinating research\u201d Schneider adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditional crystallography experiments involve taking a snapshot of a single state of a biological molecule such as a protein. Time-resolved crystallography, on the other hand, involves taking several snapshots in quick succession in order to observe how a protein changes shape following a reaction.
