When we share this knowledge and enthusiasm for scientific pursuits with the next generation, the architects of tomorrow’s world, we seed a future of scientific progress.

      Recognising philanthropic support

For five decades, EMBL has thrived as a global hub for cutting-edge molecular biology research, training, and services. Open collaboration has been and continues to be at the very heart of our achievements, illustrated through a rich tapestry of partnerships woven with like-minded institutions and individuals.

With our ‘12 moments of philanthropy’ series during our 50th anniversary year, we want to express our deep gratitude towards individuals, foundations, and other supporters who have made a difference to EMBL through their vision and generosity. Each gift – whether small or large in financial terms – has helped advance science and nurture the scientists of the future in exemplary ways, illuminating the power of giving.

The 11th moment of philanthropy illustrates how private funding laid the foundation for a unique permanent exhibition that shares the fascination of science with the lay public – particularly the next generation. EMBL created an interactive exhibition with its World of Molecular Biology, making the fascinating world of molecular biology accessible to everyone.

In 2015, when EMBL decided to establish the Imaging Centre, a long-held dream began to take shape: to create a space for science to spring to life for a wide range of audiences. People of all ages would experience and understand the fascinating processes of life at molecular and cellular levels, learning how life sciences research safeguards both our health and that of our planet.

Ultimately, this led to the bold vision to create an interactive exhibition that incorporates dramatic visuals and some of the latest technologies used to communicate science to the general public, such as interactive gaming and virtual reality headsets.

Students during their visit to The World of Molecular Biology. The outline for this discovery space started to take form, where visitors could explore a wide range of activities organised into three thematic sections and make use of the EMBL Imaging Centre’s two levels.

Such a bold vision could only become reality with partners committed to supporting scientific education. The H.W. & J. Hector Foundation embraced the initiative in the project’s early stages by providing generous core funding for numerous exhibition elements and sparking a wave of further private and public support.

Dr. h.c. Hans-Werner Hector said: “Research in a wide variety of areas influences all of our lives. We are very pleased that we can contribute to making biological processes and structure more transparent and better understood.”

In addition, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the City of Heidelberg provided generous funding. The foundation Carl-Zeiss-Stiftung specifically enabled the section of the exhibition dedicated to modern imaging technologies. Long-time EMBL partners, such as Manfred Fuchs and the Rudolf Fuchs GmbH & Co. KG, the Sparkasse Heidelberg Foundation, the EMBL Endowment Foundation, and the Friends of EMBL, eagerly joined in. For each one of them, this was a unifying project to foster dialogue around the life sciences and inspire visitors with what would ultimately be called The World of Molecular Biology.

The exhibition opened in mid-2023. Since then, EMBL’s Science Education and Public Engagement (SEPE) team offers free guided tours of the interactive exhibition to school groups aged 14 and above, as well as any interested visitor who registers via a dedicated website. Touchscreens, joysticks, and virtual reality headsets bring to life a wide range of molecular biology research, thereby sharing information, impacts, and even the beauty of this scientific discipline. Additionally, workshops and supplementary educational materials make technical topics more accessible.

So far, over 2,000 people, including nearly 1,000 school children, have been inspired by the tours and workshops that provide deeper insights into a world of molecular biology. Many students have expressed interest in doing internships at EMBL after visiting the exhibition, and others have even reported that the experience sparked their interest in studying biology.

“The programme is so inspiring!” remarked a teacher from the Heidelberg school Marie-Baum-Schule. “It sparks students’ curiosity to learn more about molecular biology.”

If you would also like to support EMBL, click here to learn about special funding opportunities during our 50th anniversary year!

„Die Welt der Molekularbiologie“

Lebenswissenschaften für alle – Ein Geschenk an die Zukunft

Seit 50 Jahren lebt das EMBL die Überzeugung, dass Wissensdurst und Neugierde der Motor für neue Entdeckungen zum Wohle der Menschheit und des Planeten sind.
