The EMBL-led Traversing European Coastlines (TREC) project aims to make substantial contributions towards solving important environmental and societal problems, such as climate change, chemical pollution, biodiversity decline, and antibiotic resistance spread. The associated research expedition collected extensive environmental samples and data along Europe’s coasts during 2023 and 2024, using a fleet of mobile labs on land, accompanied by the research vessel Tara.

      Recognising philanthropic support

For five decades, EMBL has thrived as a global hub for cutting-edge molecular biology research, training, and services. Open collaboration has been and continues to be at the very heart of our achievements, illustrated through a rich tapestry of partnerships woven with like-minded institutions and individuals.

With our ‘12 moments of philanthropy’ series during our 50th anniversary year, we want to express our deep gratitude towards individuals, foundations, and other supporters who have made a difference to EMBL through their vision and generosity. Each gift – whether small or large in financial terms – has helped advance science and nurture the scientists of the future in exemplary ways, illuminating the power of giving.

Our ninth moment of philanthropy demonstrates how the TREC research expedition combines visionary science with philanthropic commitment to enable pioneering achievements for the benefit of our planet.

Through its capacity to expand scientific knowledge and raise international environmental awareness, the TREC expedition has the potential to change our world. Never before have researchers from various disciplines studied life outside laboratories to such an extent – at 115 locations across Europe, on land, at sea, and in the air, collecting over 70,000 samples using more than 200 standardised protocols.

An expedition of this scale would have been scarcely imaginable without visionary science, seed funding from EMBL member states, vigorous support from academia, industry, and society, contributions from the Friends of EMBL and other private individuals, as well as foundations such as the Manfred Lautenschläger Foundation. Thanks to the foresight of the Foundation, one of the main highlights of the expedition, the Advanced Mobile Lab (AML), was developed as a 22-ton technical marvel that complemented stationary laboratories and enabled many new experimental concepts. A sophisticated laboratory on wheels, the AML provided mobile experimental lab space and state-of-the-art instruments. It visited several ‘supersites’ along the route of the TREC expedition, supporting scientific projects and providing access to advanced instrumentation for local researchers.

The support of numerous industry partners and specialised service providers also enabled cutting-edge technology and logistics services, allowing an unprecedented standardisation of sample collection and data integration. Thanks to these services, researchers from more than 21 countries had the unique opportunity to learn how to use state-of-the-art equipment on-site.

TREC Outreach in Lorient in April 2023. The mobile labs are not just technical masterpieces, but symbols of the unwavering hope that together, through courage and commitment, we can make a lasting, positive difference for our planet and the next generation.”

Protecting our planet requires more than just scientific knowledge. It needs every individual’s commitment as well as philanthropy’s driving force. Therefore, during its journey, the TREC team not only collected data but also invited people to come aboard the Advanced Mobile Lab. In many European countries, scientists engaged with politicians, students, and citizens to illustrate how molecular biology helps illuminate the ecological state of their own environments. Each participant was able to experience first-hand how scientific insights, personal actions, and philanthropic engagement can work together to solve environmental problems.

In July 2024, TREC’s sampling phase concluded in Greece with great success. More expeditions will follow and the scope will be expanded (e.g. to different habitats). More and more people across Europe will thus be able to experience first-hand how environmentally relevant scientific data is generated and what research can achieve. Although analysing the data and publishing results will extend over several years, TREC is already a testament to how pioneering achievements in science can be amplified through philanthropy.

If you would also like to support EMBL, click here to learn about special funding opportunities during our 50th anniversary year!

Die TREC Forschungsexpedition

Visionäre Forschung auf Rädern und wie Philanthropie Wissenschaft voranbringt

Von Mareile Vogler, Resource Development Manager, EMBL Office of Resource Development

Stellen Sie sich eine Reise vor, die nicht nur Ländergrenzen überschreitet, sondern auch tief in die Geheimnisse unserer Küstenökosysteme eintaucht.
